Job Purpose
The College of MVLS are seeking to appoint a Laboratory Supervisor for the Davidson Washroom. The purpose of the job is to support the infrastructure of the complex that houses several schools, supervising the day to day running of a sterilisation and wash-up service for research laboratories within the Davidson Complex (Davidson, Wolfson Link, SJBB)
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To supervise the washroom team providing a sterilisation, biological waste disposal and washup service, reporting on a day-to-day basis to the Washroom Supervisor.
2. Responsible for the day to day running of the washroom, prioritising and organising the work schedule of the washroom.
3. Accountable for the management and planning of activity in the washroom, ensuring procedures are being followed to ensure a quality and safe service is consistently delivered.
4. Accept glassware, plasticware and other laboratory materials daily for handwashing, machine washing and sterilising as required.
5. Organising the collection and recording of lab coats from various areas for laundering.
6. Repair chipped glassware by flaming using a Bunsen burner.
7. Accept pipettes and waste within autoclave bags and sterilise via autoclaving.
8. Load, unload and operate washing machines, autoclaves, and sterilising ovens.
9. Ensure all waste is disposed of safely and appropriately as set out in the MVLS Waste Management Policy.
10. Ensure safe disposal of broken glassware.
11. Ensure glassware, plasticware etc is meticulously clean and effective quality control of materials is carried out.
12. Daily management of stock levels, ordering stock through MVLS Stores when required.
13. Carry out general housekeeping within the washroom areas.
14. Keeping records of various items for recharging.
15. Monthly management of accounts and recharging of all material costs.
16. Arranging regular maintenance and service visits for all electrical equipment within the washroom and prep room areas.
17. Preparing specialised medias and fly food recipes daily.
18. Provide training and guidance to washroom staff to ensure safe operational standards and quality service are maintained and delivered.
19. Responsible for the preparation and review of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and washroom risk assessments.
This is not an exhaustive list but highlights several of the key tasks, which the post holder may be reasonably expected to perform.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification framework level 5 or 6 (National 5 or 6, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role OR Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.
A2 Detailed knowledge of glass washing procedures and autoclaving.
A3 Detailed knowledge of Health and Safety procedures, including the hazards associated with cleaning and disinfection of chemicals and an understanding of safe manual handling techniques.

Essential
E1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required, to undertake the duties associated with this level of post, through appropriate relevant experience in a similar role.
E2 Experience of supervising a team.
E3 Experience in laboratory housekeeping duties.
E4 Experience in preparing and handling chemicals for cleaning and disinfectant.
E5 Experience of using MS Office 365 software applications on a regular basis.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 4, £22,681 - £25,138 per annum pro rata.
This post is part-time (14 hours per week), and open ended.
