Your Role on the Team
The navigator helps patients access evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs) with a focus on low-threshold access to MAT (medication for addiction treatment) and harm reduction. Navigators conduct outreach and identification of patients, conduct initial brief assessments, introduce patients to MAT programs and services, facilitate appointments at outpatient MAT clinics, serve as a resource and coach for their clients, and advocate for culture change in the hospital. They also assist with access to other services, such as mental health services, primary care, social services, and residential treatment facilities
What It Takes to be Successful
Required:
- Nonjudgmental, energetic, positive, harm-reduction approach to assisting patients with SUD with respect for patient confidentiality and privacy
- Knowledge and skills to efficiently operate in a PC and MAC environment and learn to use electronic health records
- Ability to communicate with patients clearly, respectfully, and in a culturally appropriate manner
- Skill to determine priorities based on general instructions and accumulated knowledge
- Skill to communicate and interact effectively and pleasantly with colleagues, faculty, students, and community leaders, from multiple cultures
- Ability to appropriately set priorities and work independently
- Interest / proficiency in working with individuals recently released from incarceration, homeless individuals, and other marginalized populations
- Accurate typing skills, data entry skills, file organizational skills, filing skills, appropriate telephone skills and pleasant telephone etiquette, ability to carefully and accurately proofread own and other's materials
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment of rapidly changing priorities and frequent interruptions
- Understanding of SUD as a medical condition and MAT as an effective, evidence-based treatment
- Knowledge and experience with SQL database, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
- Ability to analyze and take action on complex matters, documents, and tasks.
- Understanding that abstinence-based behavioral programs that discourage MAT are not evidence-based
- Ability to take the initiative and independently respond to requests in writing, in person, or over telephone
- Ability to creatively solve technology problems
- Greater than 2 years of data science research and/or work experience.
Preferred:
- Ability to communicate in languages spoken in the local community is a plus
- Preference for applicants with connections to and reflecting the diversity of the local community
