Supervising Dentist
Supervising dentists are responsible for supervising patient care provided by dental hygiene students and dental hygiene faculty. Related activities include clinical oversight and consultation, evaluation of oral abnormalities, radiographic interpretations, dental diagnosis, preventive prescriptions, and pain management. The supervising dentist is available for faculty, staff, student, and patient consultation and referrals. Supervising dentists will work closely with the associate dean and faculty to build a robust curriculum.
The tasks and responsibilities of the supervising dentist:
- Provides diagnostic, consultative, and referral services.
- Evaluates patient medical history, dental history, periodontal charting, and restorative charting.
- Consults with primary care providers for medical clearance.
- Evaluates lesions, anomalies, or other pathologies for referral.
- Manages medical emergencies.
- Approves and evaluates dental radiographs.
- Follows AAP guidelines.
- Authorize purchasing and track usage of controlled substances utilized in the clinic for pain control and control of viral, bacterial, and fungal infections.
- Approves, administers and/or supervises the administration of controlled substances including local anesthesia and nitrous oxide by faculty and students.
- Authorizes and evaluates dental sealants.
- Provides consultation in the clinical setting.
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection control policies and protocols.
- Serves as a resource to questions that faculty / student(s) may have regarding patient care.
- Attends and participates in Dental Science in-service/calibration programs, program and department meetings, and advisory board meetings.
- Coordinates and cooperates with full-time clinical course coordinators.
- Understands and applies Macomb Community College, Federal, State, ADA CODA, OSHA, CDC, HIPAA, FERPA, and State Board of Dentistry guidelines, policies, rules, and / or regulations.
- Complies with and is present at ADA CODA Accreditation Site Visits.
Qualifications
- Doctorate (DDS or DMD) from an accredited dental school.
- Currently licensed in the State of Michigan.
- Current Controlled Substance License
- Currently certified in Health Care Provider BLS/CPR.
