Supervisor - Electricians
Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Mechanical Services and Central Heating, the Supervisor- Electrician supervises the electrical shop. This Supervisor- Electrician must be available for after hours and emergency response when required.
Responsibilities
- Supervise a team of skilled electricians including hiring, providing feedback, and effectively supporting their work through effective communication and conflict resolution.
- Day to day operation of the shop. Plans and assigns work to subordinates, reviews and approves time cards, orders materials and prepares estimates.
- Inspects completed work for conformance to College Standards.
- Ensures work is performed in a safe manner, including required training.
- Maintains working relationships with all campus customers.
- Inspects facilities and identifies needed work, submitting service requests as appropriate.
- Monitors work requests and PMs on TMA CMMS system.
- Prepares annual project list and capital prioritization to assist in pursuing funding.
- Monitors overall Electrical system performance from 13.8KV campus primary feeder down to 480/208/110 building level distribution.
- Administer maintenance contracts for elevators, generators, and fire alarm systems, verifying service delivery and adherence to safety standards
- Manages department spending to adhere to operational budget over the fiscal year
- Prepare and contract for work beyond the scope of the shop.
- Interface with utility companies as needed.
- Seek out opportunities to improve system reliability and efficiency.
- Solicit proposals and evaluate costs from outside vendors.
- Assess contractor work for quality and adherence to design and specs.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Associates degree in a related electrical discipline.
- Ten years of experience in all aspects of electrical work.
- Four years of supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of electrical principles and their application to the maintenance, repair, installation of electrical distribution systems, devices and electrical generation systems.
- Knowledge of regulatory codes and requirements such as NEC and BOCA codes; familiarity with Town of Poughkeepsie building codes.
- Knowledge of the application and use of testing equipment utilized in checking, testing and analyzing electrical systems such as Volt-Ammeters, voltage testers, phase and rotation testers, multi-meters, etc.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license for at least 2 years.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, including understanding, speaking, reading and writing.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Ability to use hand tools, handle wires, and assemble small components with precision.
- Ability to move, position, place and transport objects up to and including 50 pounds.
- Ability to ascend and descend ladders and scaffolding.
- Ability to stand and walk for a prolonged period of time.
- Ability to interact effectively with a diverse community.
Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities
- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Experience working in a unionized environment.
- Experience working in higher education.
