Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS), Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders support HCC students in high-risk courses through weekly study sessions. CAPS is seeking SI Leaders in the following courses: BUS-115 Computer Applications ASL-101 American Sign Language I DFS-101 Introduction to Deaf Studies Orientation and training are provided. On-the-job assistance and resources are available regularly.
Employment dates: August 24, 2026 through December 18, 2026.
- Obtain the class roster of the assigned course during the first and second week of class.
- Note any changes in the class roster throughout the term.
- Attend the first week of class meetings of the assigned course and further class meetings if applicable.
- Obtain the course syllabus.
- Obtain course material.
- Read all assigned materials including text(s) and supplemental readings.
- Take notes.
- Conduct at least three 50-minute study sessions per week throughout the term.
- SI Leaders must maintain contact with the faculty member of the assigned course and provide information regarding students’ progress.
- Contact faculty members when needed regarding course materials/assignments.
- Verify if faculty members will offer students extra credit or incentives for attendance at SI sessions.
- Collect data via your CAPS Activity Log and Navigate regarding SI session attendance.
- SI Leaders must use strategies learned through SI Orientation, SI Leader Manual, and CAPS Tutor Training to create and use SI session handouts approved by faculty.
- SI Leaders must regularly meet with the Assistant SI Leader Coordinator to discuss the planning of SI sessions, the creation and use of the SI session handouts, observation of the SI sessions, the use of a wide variety of learning strategies, and potential problems.
- Other responsibilities: provide extra SI sessions as necessary and meet with other SI Leaders and supervisory staff at scheduled meetings.
REQUIRED:
- Education: Currently enrolled as a HCC student in good standing, without a degree.
- Coursework: Have completed the specific course you want to support, earning at least a B+.
- Interpersonal skills: Good communication, active listening, patience, empathy, teamwork, conflict resolution, and collaboration.
- Technical skills: Basic computer skills and Google apps (training will be provided), organization, time management, and planning.
- Recommendation: At least one faculty recommendation, vouching for your proficiency in the course.
Part-Time, Non-Benefited Position
Hourly Rate: $15.00/hr.
Hours: up to 18.5 hours/week.
Funding: Perkins Grant
