Position Title: Suraj Israni Endowed Chair in Cinematic Arts, Department of Visual Arts

Salary Range: A reasonable salary range estimate for this position is $92,500 - $135,300. The posted UC Academic salary scales set the minimum pay as determined by rank and/or step at appointment. Off-scale salaries and other additional pay components may be offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.

Position Description

The Department of Visual Arts, University of California, San Diego (http://visarts.ucsd.edu) invites applications for the Suraj Israni Endowed Chair in Cinematic Arts, to be appointed at the Associate or Full Professor rank. The ideal candidate will be a filmmaker working in narrative, documentary, experimental, or hybrid forms of cinema, or a scholar focusing on film theory, film history, and/or film curation and programming.

The Department of Visual Arts is among the world’s leading art schools, founded on the principle that the production, critical analysis, and history of art are interrelated activities. The department offers undergraduate degrees in Art History, Studio Art, Media, Speculative Design, and Interdisciplinary Computing in the Arts Major (ICAM), as well as internationally renowned graduate programs in Studio Art (MFA) and Art History & Art Practice (PhD).

The Suraj Israni Endowed Chair in Cinematic Arts was created to expand UC San Diego’s ability to bridge contemporary media art and film scholarship/production. The chair is housed in the Department of Visual Arts and facilitated in close partnership with the School of Arts and Humanities.

Teaching Load:

Nine courses over two years (4 courses one year, 5 the next, rotating).

Appointment Start Date: Expected July 1, 2025, but negotiable.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications (Required at Time of Application)

Applicants must possess an MFA or PhD degree.

Evidence of national or international accomplishment as demonstrated by screenings, exhibitions, publications, and/or projects in venues relevant to the candidate’s practice.

Demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including supervision of teaching assistants.

Preferred Qualifications

Filmmakers with specializations in cinematography, editing, directing, producing, or screenwriting experience.

Candidates engaged in both filmmaking and film theory/scholarship.
