Swine Unit Facilities Manager
Job Description
The School of Animal Sciences (SAS) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a Swine Unit Facilities Manager to oversee operations at the Kentland Farm swine research and teaching facility. This position plays a critical role in integrating applied research, undergraduate instruction, and industry engagement within a modern farrow-to-finish production system (~60-sow capacity).
The successful candidate will provide leadership in animal care, unit management, student training, and research coordination, while ensuring compliance with university, state, and federal regulations governing animal use and agricultural operations.
Required Qualifications
- B.S. in Animal Sciences or closely-related field; and/or equivalent years of training and experience
- Demonstrated experience in swine production systems, particularly farrow-to-finish operations
- Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills
- Ability to supervise and train individuals with varying levels of experience
- Expected to enroll in and complete a M.S. degree within four years
- PQA Plus certification (or willingness to obtain within two years)
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and work in physically-demanding agricultural environments
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. in Animal Sciences or related discipline (completed or in progress)
- Experience supporting research trials and data collection
- Familiarity with precision livestock technologies and digital record systems
- Demonstrated ability to manage budgets or agricultural enterprise finances
- Experience in teaching or mentoring students in applied animal systems
