About the Project

This project investigates the synthesis of mixed anion thin films for transparent conductor applications. The project will involve the use of a range of thin film deposition techniques, including aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition.

Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) combine low electrical resistances with transparency to visible light. This combination of properties has made these materials indispensable to modern technology, found in the screens of smart phones and tablets, in photovoltaic panels and in thermally efficient glazing. However, the most prolific and effective TCOs rely on indium which is scarce and in limited supply.

In this project you'll explore the synthesis of novel mixed anion thin films, and assess their potential as replacement for current TCOs. You'll gain expertise in inorganic synthesis, and associated characterisation techniques such as NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry for precursor characterisation, as well as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, etc., to evaluate the thin film properties.

A vital component of the project will be access to the unique synthesis and testing apparatus available with our industrial partner to explore translation of the methodology to larger scale coaters. The project will be jointly supervised by Professors Geoffrey Hyett and Gill Reid in a collaboration with Pilkington NSG.

Entry requirements

You must have a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, in Chemistry or another related discipline.

Due to funding restrictions, this position is open to applicants from the UK and EU/Horizon Europe partner countries only.

Fees and funding

This project is funded by the EPSRC Collaborative Studentships scheme.

Tuition fees will be paid, and you'll receive an enhanced stipend at current research council rates for up to 3.5 years.
