Systems Administrator II
The Systems Administrator (SA) is responsible for provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, updating, and maintenance of systems, hardware, and software, and related infrastructure. This individual is responsible for the administration of many college technologies, such as email, hosted services, web conferencing, and other communications technologies. This individual is responsible for identity and access management (IAM) for Active Directory administration, systems administration for multiple operating systems (Windows, Red Hat Linux, and other Linux), configuring and using automation tools to improve processes, and telecommunications administration. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the institution. This individual ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, telecommunications, and related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff, faculty, and students.
Plan & Implement New Technologies:
- Plan, prepare, design, implement, operate, and optimize all aspects of systems and network infrastructure for multiple campuses.
- As a self-starting technical expert, works with the team to ensure the current environment aligns with industry best practices, using validated designs and standardized architecture.
- Implements systems and network security controls to enforce business rules with guidance from the Cybersecurity Director.
- In some cases, new technologies are governed by projects at higher levels, and in other cases, it is incumbent upon the position to implement technology as a result of system updates and patches.
Evaluate Systems & Network Functionality:
- Tracks and analyzes server, storage, and network utilization to avoid service congestion and provides forecasting of potential needs to the team and supervisor.
Collaborate With the Team For Optimal Systems Management:
- Cross-trains colleagues and is able to quickly learn IT disciplines as needed (e.g., server virtualization, Windows server administration, Linux server administration, storage, backups, etc.) to support the team.
- Provides guidance for work-study employees as needed.
Own & Maximize Functionality Of Systems & Servers:
- Serve as system owner, subject matter expert, and escalation point for server operations and technologies the team administers.
- Ability to integrate and hold multiple vendors accountable in a heterogeneous environment.
- The position is responsible and held accountable for servers and affiliated systems of the Aims infrastructure. For example, the position is responsible for maintaining patching, availability, etc.
Other Duties as Assigned:
- Participate in on-call rotation for the Network, Infrastructure, and Communications team.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or other related field; plus, four (4) years repairing, maintaining, and troubleshooting wired and wireless networks and multiple server environments in a multi-site datacenter, cloud and networked environment, working with multiple operating platforms (Windows Server, Red Hat Linux, etc.), experience with the principles and practice of system configuration management, and understanding of the principles of fiber networks or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience.
- This position requires the use of a company vehicle for business travel. The selected candidate must successfully pass an MVR and be insurable under Aims insurance.
- Extensive knowledge of: Windows, LINUX, and network testing and monitoring procedures.
- Familiarity with database administration and scripting.
- Ability to solve problems quickly.
- Ability to establish processes and automate them to track and implement system solutions.
- Ability to modify systems to meet new security requirements.
- Prior experience participating in strategic IT planning.
- Prior experience in a virtualized environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in Higher Education
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in a related field
- Systems or network-related certifications
- Prior telecommunications management experience.
- Prior experience with identity access management systems such as Okta.
- Prior experience with automation tools such as Ansible, Workato, etc.
