Required Qualifications:
- Experience analyzing, interpreting and communicating federal, state, and local regulations and laws.
- Must be: currently licensed as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) OR have passed a minimum of two current credits on the CPA exam with plans to complete testing requirements within two years.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills needed to identify and resolve problems related to tax issues, complete assigned projects, and prioritize workload.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from accredited four-year college or university with a major in accounting.
- Experience working in higher education
- Professional communication skills to work with other offices across campus, as well as work collaboratively with other team members.
Job Description:
The Tax Analyst will be responsible for serving as the University’s primary information resource on tax compliance matters. The selected candidate will act as a liaison between Texas State departments and various taxing authorities.
Job Duties:
- Primarily responsible for university-wide IRS tax compliance and reporting, including all required filings; provides oversight and coordination of contributors across departments and external vendors to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant reporting across all university operations. This includes Forms 990, 990-T, and related filings; IRS Forms 1042-S, 1099, 941, 1098-T, 1095-C, and related reporting.
- Develop procedures and training for staff to enable them to carry out their responsibilities; to include, but not limited to: Unrelated business income (UBIT), Texas sales/use tax, 1098-T reporting, 1099 reporting, tax compliance for nonresident alien employees/students/independent contractors, fringe benefits and employment tax, worker’s classification (employee vs independent contractor)
- Research taxability inquiries, provide tax-related guidance, and prepare written responses to ruling requests.
- Review vendor W-8 Ben and W-8 BEN-E forms for foreign persons and communicate with the department to discuss tax implications. Review independent contractor determination worksheets.
- Maintain updated tax information on department’s website.
- Stay updated on tax laws and regulations to ensure compliance.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
