Key Responsibilities

Lakeland College strives to be a national post-secondary leader in applied research that drives innovation and excellence in commercial agriculture and student learning. The Department of Applied Research at Lakeland College is inviting applications for a Research Scientist in cereal crops to join our growing crop applied research team. Reporting to the Director of Applied Research, this position is 100% dedicated to applied research activities and related administrative responsibilities. This position, based in Vermilion, will be part of the Lakeland College crop research team that includes two (2) other crop scientists focused on canola and pulse and special crops. It will also work collaboratively across disciplines with a group of livestock and precision agriculture scientists.

The successful candidate will have the vision and proven qualifications to build a successful collaborative and externally funded research program that aligns with the cereal crop industry priorities. It will also be expected to provide research services to industry stakeholders and support the cereal Regional Variety Trial program in Vermilion. The successful candidate will work closely with industry partners including Alberta Grains and Western Grains Research Foundation in developing and managing their research program and extension activities. In that regards, they will be expected to disseminate research results though scientific and industry communications and will have shared responsibilities with other crop scientists for organizing our annual field day. Finally, the successful candidate will work with faculty and others at the College to integrate crops research into academic programming and engage with Student Managed Farm (SMF) teams.

Job Requirements

  • A minimum of a MSc Degree (PhD is preferred) in Agriculture, Agronomy, Crop Science, Applied Plant Science, or closely related fields with a minimum 5 years of experience in cereal crops research relevant to Alberta.
  • Strong track record of industry relevant research, engagement, and extension activities.
  • Evidence of effective supervision, training, and student engagement.
  • Practical knowledge of small plot crop research, experimental design and project implementation and execution.
  • Good working knowledge of field equipment and laboratory operations.
  • Working knowledge of various computer software programs including SAS or other statistical software, Microsoft Office, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, leadership, coordination, and problem-solving skills.

Additional Information

This is a full-time position term position with an anticipated start date of April 1, 2024 and ending March 31, 2028, with possibility of extension. The term will include a 1-year probationary period and salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience.
