The role

Are you a talented individual with experience in Quantum Communications, Experimental Quantum Technologies, Photonics, Electronics/Software Development for Research, or Quantum Optics? Join our team in developing cutting-edge quantum communication and quantum key distribution (QKD) technologies.

As a member of our team, you will help design, build and test QKD systems for various applications, including satellite-based and fibre-based systems. You will also have the opportunity to work on large-scale quantum networks, photonic chips for QKD, and novel QKD protocols.

We are looking for a Research Associate (I) or Senior Research Associate (J), with funding until October 2026 and potential for extension. Apply now to be part of a ground-breaking project and open the door to new opportunities beyond this role.

What will you be doing?

  • You will contribute to the team at Bristol working on quantum communications technologies.
  • You will have to opportunity to work closely with satellite based QKD systems including building the payload and ground based receiving station. You will have the opportunity to work with theoretical and experimental researchers within the university, as well as external collaborators and industrial partners.
  • You will have day-to-day responsibility for the design and execution of experiments in collaboration with other members of QET Labs and the QComms Hub
  • Develop ideas for generating industrial impact from research projects, and present proposals to senior researchers and collaborators.
  • You will significantly contribute towards preparation and submission of manuscripts, reports and presentations.

You should apply if

  • Are interested in working at the cutting edge of experimental: quantum optics, photonics and quantum communication technologies.
  • Have experience in some of the following areas: photonics, free space optics, packaging photonic chips, fibre optics, entanglement sources, DV/CV QKD, optical communication, electronics, programming, cyber security or other quantum technologies and related theoretical work.
  • Have the ability to contribute ideas for projects delivering industrial or academic impact
  • Have a PhD (or working towards one) in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering, Physics, or other relevant discipline (or equivalent research experience)

Contract type: Open ended with fixed term funding up to 31/10/2026
