Job Summary
This position will be responsible for executing an academic advisement strategy that supports the retention, progression, and graduation of students across several degree programs in Clayton State University's Center for Advising and Retention.
Serve as frontline contact for undergraduate students for academic advising to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. Build formative relationships with students by interpreting information concerning course descriptions, program requirements, prerequisites, and registration procedures. Play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate students' persistence to graduation. The Advisor will offer excellent customer service and high-quality advising assistance to students.
Responsibilities
- Monitors, advises and tracks the retention, progression, and graduation of all students within the assigned population.
- Execute and evaluate campaigns in collaboration with the Assistant Director and/or Director
- Provides fundamental level support while advising on academic, career, and life goals
- Make resolution recommendations on academic advising matters to the Assistant Director
- Advise students regarding academic programs, curricula, and course selections
- Maintains updated student files throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary.
- Disseminate information on university policies and procedures to faculty, parents, students, etc.
- Provides assistance and advisement to students in the areas of program admission requirements, registration, probation, academic suspension, and other academic policies and procedures.
- Conducts orientation sessions for groups of incoming students.
- Conducts informational outreach to various classes and/or student groups
- Audits student records for curriculum, major, and graduation requirements.
- Follows up in advising students who have obtained failing midterm and final grades.
- Compares transcripts with entrance and graduation requirements and advises students on appropriate actions.
- Refers students with academic discrepancies to proper officials for further action.
- Assists in the preparation of special reports relating to enrollment and related matters.
- Evaluate and maintain student records for degree requirements using an academic evaluation system. Monitors student registration activities and academic performance/progress.
- Coordinates communications with students regarding course scheduling, core and major requirements, academic resources, etc.
- Participates in college or institutional student success initiatives
Required Qualifications
One (1) or more years of related work experience, preferably in higher education.
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree with 3-5 years in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of student information systems (for example, BANNER) is preferred.
- Knowledge of academic fields for advising disciplines; Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with Degree Audit tools (DegreeWorks is preferred)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; effective organizational skills and time management skills
- Must be flexible and be able to prioritize and to function independently with minimal supervision; must be able to work cooperatively and diplomatically with superiors, peers, students, and outside agencies.
- Ability to work flexible schedules (some evenings and Saturdays are required).
- Ability to encourage and motivate students to overcome obstacles and achieve goals
