This pivotal role requires an individual with a clear strategic vision, strong leadership skills, and the ability to drive excellence in teaching, research, and outreach. As the Department Head, you will report directly to the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences. Located in Brookings, South Dakota, this is a 12-month administrative appointment with an academic rank of Professor.

 

AHPS is a vibrant and dynamic unit within the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences. The department comprises 40 full-time faculty members and 43 dedicated permanent staff. Our programs offer undergraduate instruction leading to a B.S. degree with majors in Agronomy, Horticulture, and Precision Agriculture. We also offer graduate degrees, including an M.S. and Ph.D. in Plant Science, and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences. The department boasts several state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, both on and off-campus, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration. CAFES is one of the eight colleges that make up South Dakota State University. Like the university, the college has a three-fold mission to teach, conduct research and deploy outreach programs to serve people in South Dakota, the nation, and the world. In addition to six academic departments, the college is home to both the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) and SDSU Extension. Extension and AES faculty and staff are distributed throughout the academic departments in CAFES and three additional SDSU colleges. Nearly all faculty have appointments in at least two of the mission areas. SDSU West River Research and Extension in Rapid City is an outreach facility of the college that supports teaching, research, and extension in the western part of the state. Other locations throughout the state include eight SDSU Extension Regional Centers and eight AES research field stations. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Department Head must lead the department to develop and maintain strong, relevant research, teaching, and extension programs; foster strong working relationships between the department and its alumni, university stakeholders (including commodity groups and other such constituencies), employers, and news media; develop and manage budgets; manage personnel; represent the department in communications with the college and the university.

 

SALARY RANGE:

The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications and experience, minimum of $150,000 annually. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Ph.D. in Agronomy, Biotechnology, Entomology, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, or a closely related field completed by date of application.
  • Eligible for the rank of Professor in AHPS Department.
  • Competence in research, teaching, and professional outreach.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability or potential to effectively manage budgets and personnel.
  • Ability or potential to advocate the department’s programs and initiatives to various statewide constituencies.
  • Commitment to the land-grant philosophy and system.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Recognized nationally or internationally in field of expertise.
  • Ability or potential to secure funding to support and expand departmental programs; and
  • Experience managing research units and field research stations.
