The role

This Horizon Europe funded project (eVTOLUTION) aims to demonstrate a range of novel technologies applicable to the propeller aerodynamic and aeroacoustic design. It focuses on developing suitable experimental and numerical tools to improve the design and evaluation processes for the next-generation propellers, dedicated to electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles for Urban Air Mobility applications.

The project provides a unique opportunity to work closely with industrial and academic partners, including GKN-UK and Vertical Aerospace, to make a tangible impact to the UAM community, contributing to future, sustainable aviation. You will be joining a team of highly motivated researchers across Europe. The University of Bristol is a home to the UK National Wind Tunnel Facilities, including facilities specifically designed for propeller aerodynamics and aeroacoustics. As a successful candidate, you will primarily undertake experimental study and will gain further knowledge and experiences with designing and conducting tests using the facilities and the state-of-the-art measurement techniques. Please note that, due to operational requirements, we would like the successful applicant to start in post as soon as possible, preferably no later than January 1st 2025.

Shortlisting will take place on 6th and 9th September with a provisional interview date on the 18th and/or 19th and/or 20th September.

What will you be doing?

You will be responsible for designing and manufacturing of test set-up, and performing wind tunnel studies to investigate single and multi-rotor of different design and operating conditions and will also work with a Research Associate in the numerical team to collectively improve our understanding and practices in performance prediction and evaluation of next-generation propellers. The outcomes of the project are expected to be published in the field’s top journals.

You should apply if

You:

  • have a postgraduate research degree in aerodynamics/a related field or equivalent professional qualification/experience or are working towards one
  • have research experience and good knowledge in aerodynamics, aeroacoustics and fluid mechanics
  • have extensive data post-processing and analytics skills using Matlab, python or similar programming language
  • are able to start in post as soon as possible, preferably no later than January 1st 2025

The grade offered to the successful candidate (I or J) will depend on their skills and experience. Please see the attached Job Description for more details.
