Founded in 1950, California Baptist University is a private comprehensive institution located in Riverside, California. Accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), CBU offers more than 100 majors, more than 30 graduate degree programs and eight doctoral degrees. As a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), CBU has a student population of over 11,000 students enrolled in on-campus and online degree programs. The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is comprised of three (3) academic divisions: The Division of Family and Culture, The Division of Psychology, and The Division of Social Work. Each academic division comprises various leadership positions including an Associate Dean, Department Chairs, and Program Directors. The CBSS Dean will assume responsibility for the flourishing of all on-campus and online programs within each academic division.

The mission of the CBSS is to cultivate a transformative and holistic educational environment where a biblical worldview and the study of behavioral and social sciences intersect. Guided by Christian values and principles, CBSS is dedicated to fostering academic excellence, personal growth, and spiritual development in students, faculty, and staff. Through rigorous scholarship, compassionate service, professional development, and a commitment to ethical practice, CBSS prepares graduates who are equipped to make a meaningful and positive impact on their communities and the world.

Grounded in Christian values, CBSS strives to:

Integrate Faith and Learning: Encourage the integration of spiritual principles with academic rigor to nurture well-rounded individuals who lead with Christ-centered integrity and purpose (Proverbs 2:6; Romans 12:2).

Promote Holistic Development: Support the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual development of our students, empowering them to become compassionate and effective professionals in the fields of behavioral and social sciences (I Thessalonians 5:23; II Peter 1:5-8).

Foster a Culture of Service: Inspire students to serve others with empathy and understanding, guided by a commitment to biblical justice, promoting the well-being of all individuals, communities, and families (Galatians 5:13-14; Philippians 2:3-8).

Advance Knowledge and Innovation: Encourage students and faculty to engage in critical thinking, seek knowledge, and make empirical and scholarly contributions in their fields of study to help address contemporary challenges and in contribution to the greater good (Proverbs 1:7; Colossians 2:8; James 3:17).

Cultivate a Diverse and Equitable Community: Embrace diversity, equity, and access, recognizing the inherent dignity of each individual and culture and the strength that comes from living in community with one another (Luke 4:18; John 3:16; Galatians 3:28; Romans 2:11; Revelation 7:9).

Cultivate a Community of Peacemakers: Model and cultivate Christ-like behaviors amid inevitable conflict, guided by the fruit of the spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) as we seek restoration as a collaborative community of peacemakers (Micah 6:8; Matthew 5:9; John 10:10).

Develop a global perspective: Recognize that diverse cultural experiences foster empathy, broaden horizons, and create global citizens by encouraging international study, and provide opportunities for service-learning opportunities, and cross-cultural experiences (Galatians 3:26-28; Ephesians 4:1-6).

The CBSS is home to over 70 faculty and staff in support of over 2,000 students. The Dean of the College is the chief academic officer and the administrative head of the College, a multi-disciplinary assembly of eight undergraduate, six graduate, and two doctoral degree programs, as well as the free-standing Psychological Services of Riverside Clinic.

The Dean holds academic rank and is charged with the administration, academic leadership, and supervision of the operation of the College and the affiliated clinical activities through its instructional programs, research, publications, and service activities. This leader must be a visionary who has the demonstrated ability and entrepreneurial mindset to envision the future and the administrative capacity to execute the strategic plan. The dean not only supports expansion of the college, but also the fiscal management of the costs and revenue associated with teaching and enrollment.

The Dean reports directly to the Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves on the Provost’s Council.
