Job Description
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
The University of Auckland, as partner to the Revive Our Gulf project, is seeking a skilled Restoration Practitioner to play a pivotal role in experimental processes, project coordination, monitoring, and collaboration, contributing significantly to the overall success and impact of the Revive Our Gulf project.
The purpose of this role is to build restoration know-how within the Revive Our Gulf project for kūtai (green-lipped mussel) and other shellfish restoration in the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana / Te Moananui ā Toi. Additionally, it aims to support capability building within Tangata Whenua and other Revive Our Gulf project partners of this restoration know-how and coastal restoration practices, ensuring knowledge is suitably recorded.
Experimental Design and Project Coordination, the Restoration Practitioner will work closely with the UoA Principal Investigator and the Mussel Reef Restoration Trust (MRRT) Programme Director to plan, coordinate, and execute in-water restoration and research projects. This involves co-designing restoration projects by collaborating with Tangata Whenua to ensure cultural inclusivity and restoration practices that incorporate relevant mātauranga Māori. Moreover, they will engage with other external partners and stakeholders to incorporate relevant research knowledge, overseeing the construction or physical build of restoration structures.
Monitoring, the Restoration Practitioner will coordinate and support monitoring activities in accordance with the Revive Our Gulf monitoring plan and MRRT consent requirements. They will ensure compliance monitoring is undertaken according to consent requirements and recorded appropriately, staying informed about and ensuring adherence to relevant Council consenting processes and biosecurity protocols. Additionally, they will support Revive Our Gulf’s ROV (remote operated vehicle) training and ROV tools as required.
This role is a is a .7, fixed term appointment (28 hrs per week)

Mō tō mātou rōpū | About the team
Revive Our Gulf is a collaborative project uniting iwi, hapū, researchers, and the community. In this role, you will work directly with the Principal Investigator from the University of Auckland Institute of Marine Sciences and the Programme Director of the Mussel Reef Restoration Trust. This position requires substantial engagement with the Revive Our Gulf project partners and wider stakeholders.
He kōrero mōu | About you
To be considered for this role it is essential that you have a MSc or PhD in marine science, experience in ecology or restoration and the ability to manage multiple projects.
Essential Experience/Skills
- Experience working in a large and complex organisation
- Excellent communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills
- Experience with Report writing
- Understanding of Te Ao Māori (basic te reo Māori, knowledge of tīkanga Māori)
- Swimming proficiency
- Familiarity with working on small boats
- Skilled with Google G Suite tools or Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
- Proficiency in GIS software and tools
- A team player, but self-driven and able to work independently.
- Commitment to the principles of adaptive management and continuous improvement.
- Certification in Rescue Diver/ NZ Coastguard Boatmaster & First Aid and Oxygen Provider (is preferred)
