Lecturer in Pharmacology (Learning, Teaching & Scholarship Track)
We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Pharmacology to play a leading role in the design, delivery, coordination and development of Pharmacology teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will contribute to an excellent student experience, and undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching in the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health.
The School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health is one of eight Schools within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow. The School is internationally leading in the areas of research, education (at undergraduate and postgraduate level) and has a wide ranging internationalisation, engagement and enterprise portfolio. Research in the School focusses on the areas of cardiac diseases (including but not limited to ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias and cardio-oncology), metabolic diseases (including but not limited to diabetes and obesity) and vascular diseases (including but not limited to hypertension, cerebrovascular disease and kidney disease), supported by a cross-cutting research theme in cardiovascular data science. The School is proud of its translational research strategy from fundamental and discovery science to experimental medicine, epidemiology, clinical trials and implementation research.
We welcome applications from candidates who hold a Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in Pharmacology or a related discipline and postdoctoral or relevant professional experience.
Job Purpose
To play a leading role in the design, delivery, coordination and development of Pharmacology teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to contribute to an excellent student experience, and to undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching in the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Deliver a range of teaching, supervision and assessment activities across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the subject area of Pharmacology.
2. Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
3. Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline of Pharmacology.
4. Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment, which may involve blended and/or online provision.
5. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and potentially online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem-based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.
6. Engage in scholarship by undertaking methodologically rigorous, educationally relevant, enquiries into student learning and disseminate evidence to enhance your own teaching practice and that of others. Attend and participate in appropriate seminars and conferences to support research-led teaching and scholarship in Pharmacology.
7. Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
8. Develop relationships with external stakeholders in support of knowledge exchange, public understanding and appropriate forms of outreach such as widening access.
9. Participate in local, and potentially overseas, activities associated with student recruitment (e.g. open days), orientation and induction and other School and University initiatives such as support for student transitions, employability and student mobility as appropriate.
10. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
12. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together
Qualifications
Essential:
A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in Pharmacology or a related discipline.
Desirable:
B1. Postgraduate teaching qualification and/or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
Skills

C1. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

C5. Demonstrable evidence of involvement in course and curriculum design and development.
C6. Ability to lead staff, constructively interact with colleagues, and deploy resources in support of major teaching, scholarship, or professional activities.
Desirable:
D1. Evidence of the ability and willingness to take on leadership roles and administrative responsibilities in learning and teaching.
D2. Evidence of independent thought capable of leading to the generation of original hypotheses suited to applications to grant-funded pedagogic research or scholarship.
D3. Evidence of a sympathetic approach in dealing with student problems, both academic and personal.
For Appointment at Grade 8:
D4. Skills for the development of e-learning applications with particular emphasis on applications that run in Moodle, the University’s virtual learning environment.
D5. Familiarity with generative artificial intelligence and its benefits and challenges in the context of higher education.
Experience
Essential:
E1. Postdoctoral or relevant professional experience.
E2. A comprehensive and up to date knowledge of the subject area.
E3. Insight into research in pharmacology or a related discipline that is of immediate relevance to the requirements of the post.
E4. A record of high-quality publications appropriate to the field or scholarship of equivalent significance.
For Appointment at Grade 8:
E5. A track record of excellence in the delivery of teaching in pharmacology or a related discipline that is of immediate relevance to the requirements of the post.
E6. Demonstrable experience in the development of innovative and/or active-learning approaches that enhance student engagement and attainment.
Desirable:
F1. A background in immunopharmacology and/or infection pharmacology.
F2. Experience of teaching, course coordination, and assessment at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
F3. Involvement in design, organisation and management of innovative teaching initiatives.
F4. Familiarity with the UK Professional Standards Framework, the QAA Benchmark Statement for Biomedical Sciences, and/or the British Pharmacological Society core curriculum.
For Appointment at Grade 8:
F5. Contribution to the process of curriculum review/evaluation.
F6. Experience of the development and management of taught postgraduate programmes attractive to international students.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7/8, £39,347 - £44,263/£48,350 - £56,021 per annum.
This post is full time and open ended.
