Description

The Digital Media Practices Program at Tulane University in New Orleans seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor (2-year appointment, renewable for a third year) to begin July 2024.

We seek someone with proven experience teaching beginner and intermediate video production classes, focusing on building students’ technical competencies and digital storytelling skills.

The introductory class covers all aspects of digital filmmaking from concept to final delivery, including elements of pre-production, production, post-production, and editing across narrative, documentary, and experimental genres. The intermediate class focuses on Narrative Filmmaking. We prefer candidates with experience editing in AVID (or a willingness to learn before August 2024) and working in MovieMagic Budgeting and Scheduling, as well as be familiar with industry standards and practices.

The successful candidate will teach be DMPC 2001: Intro to Digital Filmmaking (5 sections), DMPC 2002: Narrative Filmmaking (1 section), and additional classes as needed. All classes are taught in person. Additional responsibilities include curricular planning and coordination with the other members of the Digital Media Practices Program, as well as advising students academically and professionally.

Tulane’s Digital Media Practices Program educates students in the art, craft, and technology of the inherently interdisciplinary field of Digital Media. The program offers intensive, hands-on production experience through courses dedicated to film and audio production, screenwriting, documentary filmmaking, cinematography, color-grading, and digital art. The Digital Media Practices program is co-curricular with the Communication and Cinema Studies, English, Theater, Dance, Art, and Music Departments. Students may choose from a wide array of courses in one of several focus areas such as: Narrative Filmmaking, Documentary and Non-fiction Filmmaking, Sound Practice, Interactive Media, and Creative Coding. Many of our students choose to write, cast, produce, direct, shoot, and edit their own short films in fulfillment of their senior capstone project requirement.

Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have the following qualifications:

· Terminal degree in a related field and/or significant professional experience in a media field

· A minimum of one year of teaching experience (preferred beyond the graduate teaching assistant level)

· Demonstrated teaching effectiveness involving industry-standard video equipment and software

· Knowledge of industry trends and the myriad career paths available to students interested in the area

· Ability to use and teach AVID Media Composer or willingness to learn before August 2024. Training may be provided upon request.

· Ability to use/move a variety of camera equipment and filmmaking gear

Application Instructions

Submit applications at: apply.interfolio.com/142603 with a cover letter and CV. Also include a statement about your own work, a teaching philosophy document, two classroom evaluations (student or faculty peer), and a list of three professional references. For priority consideration, materials must be received by April 15, 2024. Position open until filled.
