Role Description

Research Associate, School for Business and Society 

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a team of researchers working on a new, timely project investigating the impact of a new social security benefit - The Scottish Child Payment. The post will work closely with researchers at the University of York to conduct qualitative research with parents and carers in England and Scotland, drawing a comparison between experiences of those who do and do not receive the additional support. 

Role

The main purpose of the role is to conduct qualitative research with parents and carers living on a low-income in Scotland and England. The postholder will be responsible for every aspect of the qualitative work and will have opportunities to take part in dissemination activities such as presenting at conferences and publishing the work in academic and other forums. They will take a leading role in the analysis and writing up of the data emerging from this project. 

This is a fixed-term part-time position from September 2024 to October 2025. 

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

• First degree in Social Policy, Sociology or related subject
• PhD in Social Policy or Sociology or equivalent experience
• Knowledge and experience of qualitative research 
• Expertise in social security policy and practice, and a strong engagement with poverty theory,
• Effective communication skills - both orally and in writing 
• Confident, pro-active approach to work, and readiness to develop innovative strategies to recruiting new participants
