St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton 2024

McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton are inviting applications for the position of Academic Palliative Medicine Specialist within the Department of Medicine. The successful candidate will hold a geographic, full-time position. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Position:

Academic Palliative Medicine Specialist. The successful candidate will hold an active staff appointment at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) and a full-time academic appointment at McMaster University. The effective date of this appointment is October 1, 2024.

Applicant Qualifications:

Applicants must have, or be eligible for, certification in Palliative Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). Applicants must also be eligible for or have licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.

This is a Clinician-Educator track University appointment. Though not required, individuals with graduate studies in medical education and/or research will be prioritized. The successful individual will be expected to participate in all the appropriate departmental and divisional research, education and administrative activities as set out by the clinical and academic leaders.

Candidacy for this position will be assessed by applicant’s postgraduate training, grant and publication history, awards, teaching evaluations, program development and leadership activities. The successful candidate will join the current interprofessional palliative medicine team during clinical weeks as a consultant at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. Though primarily providing inpatient consultation, the SJHH Bishop Tonnos Palliative Medicine Service is rapidly expanding and innovating in its approach to patient care delivery. In addition, the candidate will develop an academic body of work aligned with the Division of Palliative Care, including involvement with the training programs, faculty development, postgraduate and undergraduate medical education, and other academic opportunities. The successful candidate must also have strong interpersonal and communication skills and thrive within a collaborative and interdisciplinary program involving multiple specialties and consultative services.

Hospital Description:

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is one of the largest hospital systems in Ontario and provides regional medical care to over 2 million people in southern Ontario. St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is a 777-bed research and academic health science centre affiliated with the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and McMaster University. This institution offers many medical and surgical programs and serves as the regional centre for renal transplant care and mental health & addictions programs. It is also reknowned for minimally invasive / robotic surgery and respiratory health programs.

Remuneration and Academic Standing:

Academic rank, salary, and contractual arrangements will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. For the successful candidate, remuneration will be competitive with the usual income range for an academic palliative medicine physician in the province of Ontario.
