The University of Southampton (UoS), in partnership with University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), is looking to recruit an outstanding academic respiratory physician to join the current respiratory medicine team of consultants and researchers, building on the excellence in translational respiratory medicine research.

The successful candidate will work 50% as a clinical academic for the UoS and 50% of the time in the NHS, the post will be hosted by the University. Part of the University role will be to backfill the clinical service of the Director of the Institute for Medical Innovation while the Institute is established, resulting in an overall 50:50 divide.

The University of Southampton, Faculty of Medicine

The UoS is a leading research-intensive University, a member of the Russell Group and one of the top 100 universities worldwide. We deliver an excellent educational experience, world-leading research and we are known for successfully commercialising that research through enterprise.

The creation of the Faculty of Medicine has enabled us to build upon strong foundations of basic research and clinical translation specialising in Cancer Sciences (CS), Clinical and Experimental Sciences (CES), Human Development and Health (HDH) and Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education (PPM).

Working with colleagues across the University and in the local NHS, we have strengthened our position as a renowned centre for translational research, leading innovative learning and discovery for better health across the life-course.

In this context, we are looking to appoint an outstanding clinical academic to develop and lead a major programme of funded research in the field of respiratory medicine, specifically bringing new skills in emerging diagnostic methodologies to the established research programmes in Southampton, with a focus on tuberculosis.

The University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS)

UHS provides healthcare to 1.9m people living in Southampton and South Hampshire, plus specialist services to >3.7m people in central southern England and the Channel Islands. The Trust is a major centre for teaching and research. We provide a high quality care in Respiratory Medicine including a number of specialist tertiary level services, including cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis, asthma and pulmonary fibrosis.

What we are looking for

Those trained in the UK must have evidence of Higher Speciality Training leading to a Certificate of Completion of Training in Respiratory and General Medicine or be within four months of confirmed entry from the date of interview.

Applicants must have

Joint accreditation in General and Respiratory Medicine

A PhD and evidence of excellence in research, supported by strong publications, teaching experience and a track record in generating external grant income, including a competitive national fellowship. The research interests of the applicant should complement those of the current respiratory team and an interest in emerging diagnostic methodologies, such as proteomics and their application in the field of tuberculosis, is highly desirable.

Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

The Faculty of Medicine holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award demonstrating commitment to equal opportunities and gender balance in the workplace. The Faculty recognises that applicants may seek flexible working patterns which will be considered as part of the recruitment process.
