About This Opportunity
We are seeking a Research Assistant to join our collaborative team conducting testing of protein targets in cell and neuronal models of protein aggregation associated with motor neuron disease and frontotemporal dementia. Be involved in research projects using flow cytometry, microscopy, immunoblotting, qPCR, in collaboration with PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. You will work both independently and cooperatively, with access to dedicated support networks and superb neuroscience research facilities, to contribute to important discoveries.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Bacterial culture for plasmid DNA purification, mammalian cell culture and transfection, and lentiviral preparation and transduction of cells.
- Differentiation of neurons from human iPSC lines and culture of human neurons.
- Assists in the design of research studies under the supervision of senior staff
- Ensuring safe and efficient research operations, including handling chemicals and equipment.
- Maintaining accurate research records, assisting with documentation, and conducting literature searches.
- Assists with routine team administration, preparing reports, graphs, figures and presentations on research outcomes at different stages of the research cycle.

About You
- Completion of a degree level qualification in Science (Honours) with major or minor in cellular and molecular biology; or completion of a Diploma with relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
- Excellent practical research skills and experience in relevant research methodology or techniques required for this body of research
- Expertise in cell culture of immortalised cells lines, culture of iPSC-derived human neurons, transfection of cells/neurons with plasmid DNA, cell lysis and protein extraction or RNA purification.
- Experience with preparation of cells/neurons for immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy (including confocal microscopy), immunoblotting, and/or flow cytometry.
- Ability to be self-motivated and to work independently, multi-task experiments, meet timelines and collaborate effectively within a team.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Ability and willingness to learn new techniques and optimise experimental approaches.
- Understanding laboratory safety and adhering to occupational health protocols are essential for the safe and efficient operation of research equipment, infrastructure, methodologies, and chemical handling.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, etc.
