The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) is a large and dynamic department in the Faculty of Science and Health. We are internationally known for our research in a range of areas and offer an excellent education to our students. We have grown rapidly over the last few years and now wish to appoint to two additional posts to further strengthen our education expertise.

Duties of the Role

Are you ready to lead the way in cyber security research and education? The University of Essex is looking for individuals who have a desire to make a lasting impact on the field of cyber security. We are delighted to announce two new academic appointments to our innovative team dedicated to exploring new areas of research and developing an innovative Masters programme in Cybersecurity. The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering has current Cyber Security research strengths in security by design, network security and secure embedded and cyber physical systems. It is keen to welcome applications to both strengthen these areas and diversify into related cyber security fields.

The new Masters course aims to provide the essential skills to support Cyber Security within the private and public sector with a strong focus on the technical side of online digital identity, encryption, authentication, biometrics, network security as well as information security management and cyber security risk. The focus of the course is in providing a practical, real world embedding of current cyber security related technologies to allow students to achieve a high degree of understanding of existing technologies and the flexibility to deploy them imaginatively within a fast-developing threat laden world. We are therefore seeking highly motivated, enthusiastic, and professional candidates who have excellent knowledge and experience of practical cyber security issues and a strong interest in contributing to the development of the new Masters course..

The post holders will also contribute towards further evolving the laboratory facilities and carry out research focusing and leading to prestigious publications in scientific journals and conferences. As a major developing research area within the School, there is an unique opportunity for the appointed candidates to influence the future direction of research within the School and develop their own niche research interests. 

Skills and qualifications required

You will possess a relevant doctoral level research degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience or practice Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate is also essential for the post.

The successful candidate will have experience of working independently in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in engaging and innovative way. You will be able to contribute to designing and planning learning activities, developing effective learning environments (face to face and/or virtual) and approaches to student support and guidance.

You will have the ability and willingness to complement and enhance the department/school’s education strengths and areas of planned development. A clear understanding of how students learn both generally and within their subject/disciplinary area(s) and the ability to apply this understanding to their own practice.

As part of the process and to be successful you will be required to demonstrate how you your research has been impactful within and beyond the academic sphere, recognising the importance of this and the effect it will have on the University.
