Position Summary

A fixed-term Teaching Assistant Professor in Health Behavior is essential to meeting the School’s growing instructional demands and supporting increasing student enrollment while maintaining high quality, practice focused education. This position ensures sufficient faculty capacity to deliver core and required courses, prepares students with applied skills in the social and behavioral determinants of health, and strengthens the public health workforce by graduating practitioners ready to address health inequities and community needs in North Carolina and beyond.

The Department of Health Behavior, within the Gillings School of Global Public Health, seeks a fixed term Teaching Assistant Professor. The department is an interdisciplinary unit comprising approximately 30 faculty members providing graduate training to about 240 students across its Master of Public Health (MPH), MSPH, and PhD programs, as well as undergraduate education to approximately 80 students enrolled in the BSPH program in Community and Global Public Health. The Teaching Assistant Professor will contribute primarily to teaching in the BSPH program and in the MPH concentrations in Health Behavior, Global Health, and Health Equity and Social Justice. This role also includes mentoring students across degree programs and may involve teaching in the school-wide BSPH and/or MPH core curriculum. Although teaching assistant professors can conduct research or serve in administrative roles for a portion of their time, the majority of time will be dedicated to teaching and mentoring responsibilities.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

A PhD or equivalent within the area of health behavior is preferred, although candidates with a PhD in a relevant discipline will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Candidates will hold a doctoral degree or equivalent, with training and professional experience in public health that includes a strong social and behavioral focus. They should have taught successfully at the undergraduate and/or graduate level in public health, with demonstrated evidence of engagement in scholarship of teaching and learning or continuous pedagogical improvement, and ability to work effectively in a team-taught or coordinated teaching environments.
