Teaching Assistant Professor - Reed School of Media and Communications

The West Virginia University Reed School of Media and Communications seeks a dynamic, collegial faculty member for a hybrid position who will combine teaching courses in the Reed School with recruiting, training, and supervising students who work with WVU Athletics on media operations and productions.
Primary Objectives:
- Deliver high-quality academic instruction aligned with current sports media industry practices
- Mentor and supervise students in live, real-world athletics media environments
- Enhance WVU Athletics' media output
- Serve as a liaison between the Reed School and WVU Athletics media operations
Key Responsibilities
Academic Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate courses in topics including: Live sports video and digital production; Digital media tools, including AI, for brand promotion and audience engagement; Sports video reporting, storytelling, and production
- Ensure program curriculum aligns with industry standards and emerging technologies
- Advise and mentor students pursuing careers in sports media and communications
- Supervise internships and practicum courses throughout the year
- Assist with planning and execution of annual week-long high school summer media camp
- Participate in departmental service
Athletics Responsibilities
- Recruit, train, assign, and supervise students working with WVU Athletics on game-day operations and feature storytelling
- Work daily with Assistant Athletics Director for Broadcasting to assign crew for all events
- Assist in developing content strategies consistent with NCAA, Big 12 Conference, ESPN, and WVU Athletics' guidelines
- Attend weekly ESPN content meetings
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Sports Media, or related field (Master's preferred)
- Minimum three years of professional experience working in broadcast sports production
- Demonstrated experience teaching, mentoring, or supervising students
- Demonstrated experience in live video production, digital media platforms, new media tools and technologies, and audience analytics
- Excellent communication and collaborative skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working within a Division I university Athletics Department
- Prior collegiate-level teaching experience
- Familiarity with NCAA rules and compliance standards
