About the role

The Science Communication Unit sits within the Centre for Languages Culture and Communication (CLCC) at Imperial and runs one of the world’s most established science communication masters programmes. We are looking for a sessional lecturer to teach an academic option module ‘Science Communication and Global Justice’.

The CLCC provides breadth to the study of science, engineering and medicine with a range of humanities-focused courses and modules, including Imperial Horizons, the Science Communication Unit, which offers two Masters’ programmes, the Languages Unit, and the Adult Education programme.

What you would be doing

You will develop and deliver the module ‘Science Communication and Global Justice’ in the spring term over five 90-minute sessions. You will be responsible for preparing course readings, setting and marking essay coursework, and providing detailed written feedback to students. You will also run additional support tutorial sessions as agreed by your line manager.

What we are looking for

We are looking for an individual with proven expertise in relating the social contexts of science to current debates about global justice. You will have experience of teaching and research in this area and/or practical experience of science communication projects in the Majority World/Global South. To be successful in this post, you will be able to work flexibly as part of a team in an open-minded and cooperative manner, with strong communication and organisational skills. The position will suit an individual with a good understanding of the needs of science graduates who are pivoting to careers in science communication.

Further information

  • Salary: £1,081.26 - £1,224.16 (hourly paid equivalent to 0.02 FTE of £54,063 - £61,208)
  • This is a variable hours open ended post based on 7.5 contact teaching hours over 5 weeks with preparation and marking time.
  • Teaching normally takes place in the Spring Term, on a Monday or Tuesday.
  • This role requires the post-holder’s attendance on campus.
  • It is expected that the successful candidate will carry out a range of duties including on non-teaching days and in the university vacation period.
  • The hourly rate includes a component to cover course preparation and administration, and as part of this attendance at occasional staff meetings will be required.
