Department of Building and Real Estate
The Department of Building and Real Estate is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Construction and Environment. The Department offers a full range of programmes leading to the awards of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy, Master of Science and Bachelor of Science. It has an undergraduate student body of over 600 full-time students and a postgraduate student body of over 300. The Department currently has a total of 30 full-time academic / teaching staff, 20 technical and administrative staff and over 100 research personnel. The Department is looking for enthusiastic, established and suitably qualified person with a PhD degree to join the Department to take part in a number of teaching and research activities.
Duties
The appointee will be required to:
- conduct lectures, tutorials and supervise students at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels at the scheduled time. Some evening teaching is expected;
- prepare teaching materials including hand-outs, presentations, coursework assignments, examination papers, etc.;
- meet with students during office or assigned hours on academic matters, career issues and other appropriate matters;
- assess students’ study progress by periodic evaluations through coursework assignments, tests and examinations according to established grading scheme / policy;
- propose / plan new programmes, design / review subject / programme curriculum, and design / facilitate learning activities;
- contribute to subject / programme validation and coordinate programme quality assurance processes;
- help promote teaching quality by leading / organising teaching development projects, and/or chairing / serving on teaching-related committees / panels, and by means of workshops / forums and by coaching / mentoring other junior teaching staff to become better teachers;
- engage actively in scholarly activities;
- perform administrative duties as and when called upon by the Head of Unit;
- render professional service to the community and support activities that promote or foster links with the profession in the industry and/or in the community, e.g. serving on committees of external bodies of the profession, etc.; and
- perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Unit or his/her delegates.
Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- a relevant master’s degree and/or a relevant professional qualification plus not less than five years of post-qualification tertiary teaching experience and/or relevant professional, practical or industrial experience;
- documented professional achievements in teaching and demonstrated high level of competence in design and delivery of teaching, curriculum and pedagogy development, subject administration and programme management;
- some experience in academic management and leadership;
- a good command of both written and spoken English and Chinese; and
- good teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills.
Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
