Teaching Fellow, STEM Career Advantage Academy

Position Overview

SCAA is seeking Teaching Fellows (TFs) to work closely with high school and undergraduate students in 1:1 advising sessions and small group Personal Narrative Workshops that teach students the "craft" of telling their story, as well as creating a personal narrative – one that is authentic, and effectively communicates their strengths, uniqueness, and potential to future peers and managers. TFs will help build the SCAA culture of engagement, initiative, collaboration and professionalism and ensure that students are effectively navigating the online learning experience.

Time Commitment Estimations

The Teaching Fellows will be required to complete a mentorship training program (8 hours) in May 2026.

The STEM Career Advantage Academy (SCAA) will take place from July 7- August 7, 2026 (5 weeks), as a series of 10 synchronous online sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays, noon-4pm ET. The TFs are not responsible for attending all the synchronous sessions. They will attend the student orientation on July 7, and they will run the personal narrative workshops on July 24, July 31. The rest of the weeks they will be working 1:1 and in small groups to support students with their work for SCAA.

This position is fully remote

  • Program Dates: July 7th to August 7th, 2026
  • Training: 8 hours
  • Total During Program Implementation: 32 hours estimated
  • Approximately 6 hours/week

HIGHLIGHTS

As a Teaching Fellow, you will:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the Senior Teaching Fellow to conduct student orientation and cohort learning activities.
  • Provide instructional and technological support during the implementation periods of the program. This will include maintaining the course Canvas site, managing break-out rooms during class, and updating the pre-work, teaching materials, and assessments.
  • Communicate information to students between meetings.
  • Work closely with the other members of the team to deliver a seamless experience to the students.
  • Contribute to the Personal Narrative Workshop – a key part of the overall program. This includes working directly with students on creating their narratives. It involves critical thinking and problem solving and addressing the challenges of individual students.
  • Successful completion of the Teaching Fellow mentoring training.

Qualifications

  • A current graduate student, postdoc, or teaching faculty.
  • Teaching and/or mentoring experience with undergraduate/high school students. Since our students are all STEM students, experience in STEM roles in jobs or in mentoring STEM students is desirable, though not mandatory.
  • A genuine interest in mentorship for students entering STEM fields.
  • Ability to lead a small group of students to help them discover their unique strengths and experiences and then develop a story bank that they can use in guiding new managers and peers in the workplace to appreciate their value.
  • Prior experience in personal narrative creation is desirable.
  • Prior experience as a teaching assistant in an online setting with diverse student groups.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, Proficiency with PowerPoint, Excel, Canvas, and Zoom.
  • Ability and commitment to attend 8 hours of training during May/June 2026 and 5-6 hours/ week availability during programming (July 7- August 7, 2026)
  • Applicant must be eligible to engage in this role per any relevant union guidelines that apply to them (this role is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement).
  • Applicant must be eligible to work in the United States. This role does not provide a work visa.
