About the Role
The Department of Law is looking to appoint a Research Assistant for the Centre for Climate Crime and Climate Justice project ‘State repression and environmental violence in West Papua’. The Research Assistant will organise impact-related activities with research partners and conduct research under the supervision of Professor David Whyte. This post is a fixed-term 3-month position, tenable for the period 1st July 2024-30th September 2024.
About You
The successful applicant must be educated to a degree level in relevant field, and haveing a master’s or equivalent degree in Politics, Human Rights or a cognate subject is desirable. You must have a strong interest and understanding of the politics of the pacific region and have some knowledge of Melanesian culture. You should have experience of writing research papers and strong written communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work both independently and in a team.
About the Project
The project ‘State repression and environmental violence in West Papua’ seeks to accelerate the impact of research on the subject published by the Centre for Climate Crime and Climate Justice. The project seeks to build upon the Centre’s hosting of an opinion tribunal on West Papua between the 27th-29th June. This tribunal involved the participation of over 30 civil society organisations and was held under the supervision of the Rome-based Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal. Key activities will involve collaborating with UK politicians, UN mandate holders and with human rights organisations to amplify the findings of the tribunal.
