Position Summary
The Department of History, Classics, and Religion at the University of Alberta invites applications for a full-time, career-track Teaching Professor position in Canadian and Indigenous History. The successful candidate will join a dynamic teaching and research environment that is actively committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, Indigenization, and decolonization.
The successful applicant will contribute primarily to undergraduate teaching, including Canadian and Indigenous survey courses, introductory-level world history, and the undergraduate historiography course, with potential to teach at the graduate level. The role also includes opportunities for administrative responsibilities and curriculum development.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach eight in-person undergraduate History course sections annually, typically across Fall, Winter, and either Spring or Summer terms
- Deliver foundational courses in pre-/post-Confederation Canadian history and pre-/post-1870 Indigenous history
- Potential contribution to graduate teaching and area coordination or curriculum administration
- Support the department’s ongoing work in reconciliation, decolonization, and inclusive pedagogical practices
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in Canadian or Indigenous History or a closely related field
- Minimum 3 years of post-secondary teaching experience in relevant subject areas
- Active engagement in scholarly teaching and pedagogical development
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability or experience teaching in:
- Disability studies
- History of medicine
- History of gender and sexuality
- Demonstrated excellence in curriculum design and inclusive instruction
- Experience managing classrooms with diverse student backgrounds and proficiency levels
