Job description:

Are you a practical and well-organised scientist who enjoys helping others succeed in their research? Do you have experience in plant, soil, or environmental science and want to build your career supporting world-class research? We have an exciting opportunity in the School of Biosciences for a Technical Manager to join Professor Katie Field’s collaborative research group. This is an open-ended post, subject to 10 years' fixed term funding.

This role puts you at the heart of a Royal Society-funded project exploring how plants and fungi interact in soils. Our team is uncovering the hidden partnerships that shape ecosystems and agriculture, from the well-known mycorrhizal associations to newly discovered fungal relationships that challenge what we thought we knew. The project brings together researchers from the University of Sheffield, the Natural History Museum, London, and Lancaster University, giving you the chance to be part of a truly multidisciplinary team.

In this role, you’ll make sure our laboratory runs smoothly every day. You’ll manage supplies and equipment, keep our facilities safe and efficient, and provide practical support to researchers and students carrying out experiments. You’ll help collect and organise data, process plant and soil samples, and support the preparation of publications and reports. You’ll also play an important role in developing sustainable laboratory practices and contributing to a positive, inclusive and collaborative team culture.

Applicants must have an MSc (or higher) level in Biosciences subject (or equivalent significant experience) along with IOSH Managing Safely (or equivalent safety qualification). Experience in a range of laboratory techniques relevant to plant-soil interactions, including soil nutrient analyses, stable and radioactive isotopes, plant and fungal culture (axenic and non-sterile), use of controlled environments for plant growth, molecular biology is also essential. In addition, applicants must be organised, reliable, and comfortable working with standard research protocols. Clear communication and accurate record-keeping will be among your strengths, and you’ll enjoy working both independently and as part of a team. Experience in laboratory management, safety compliance, and stock control is essential. Importantly, you’ll bring enthusiasm for research and a willingness to learn new skills and techniques.
