Location: College Lane Campus, Hatfield

The Technical Team in the School of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences supports a wide and diverse range of subjects including Biosciences, Pharmacy, Allied Health Professions, Sports Science, Psychology, Geography, Environment and Planning. Highly skilled technical staff are organized into small specialist teams, who work together alongside academic and research staff.

Main duties and responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for the preparation of materials (including chemicals) and equipment for Pharmaceutical and Analytical Chemistry teaching sessions, as well as clearing and safely disposing of materials after sessions are complete. You will be required to maintain laboratories in a clean and tidy state, as well as ensure that equipment is in good condition, safe to use and calibrated as necessary. You will also contribute to the maintenance of equipment inventories and ensure that health and safety practices are implemented and observed.

You will have contact with both undergraduate and postgraduate students at all stages of their learning.

Skills and experience required

You will be articulate and have good communication skills both written and verbal, you will be both reliable and a team player, as well as showing initiative and being able to work independently when necessary. You will be able to explain and demonstrate techniques to staff and students, and also be able to follow detailed instructions comprehensively.

You will be flexible, adaptable and reliable with a methodical approach and attention to detail. Good IT, numeracy and timekeeping skills are all essential.

Practical experience of working in a pharmaceutical chemistry laboratory would be an advantage in a technical role, as will knowledge and experience of analytical chemistry and pharmaceutics.

Qualifications required

You will be educated with a minimum of five GCSEs or equivalents, including Mathematics and English at grade C/4 or above.

You will be educated with A levels or equivalent in a science subject or proven experience
