Technical Officer (Recording Studio)

Technical officers in the College provide technical support for teaching and learning primarily by inducting and guiding students and approved users. Technical officers are required to develop and update SOPs on the appropriate and safe use of equipment, materials and facilities to support teaching and learning, in consultation with Deans, Heads of School, relevant Programme Leaders and the Director of Facilities.

Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Performing Arts and Head, School of Contemporary Music, you will primarily provide support in the operational aspects of the recording studio and act as a recording engineer for students, recording sessions and external hires. Your key responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage student production assistants during live sound and recording studio productions and act as a student mentor by addressing student questions and demonstrating best practices in the production environment.
  • Manage data backups and archival of the School of Contemporary Music’s projects.
  • Manage recording studio booking schedule and student access outside of scheduled class times.
  • Assist in planning, updating and disseminating of information pertaining to the recording studio schedule and procedures of usage.
  • Ensure all teaching staff and students follow health and safety procedures during rehearsals and performances.
  • Oversee live sound and recording studio inventory and schedule equipment maintenance.
  • Liaise and coordinate with other Faculties and Divisions pertaining to student projects and access to studios.
  • Identify equipment needs and propose acquisitions for the audio production studios and undertake the procurement and repair of equipment in the studio.
  • Assist the Faculty with promotion and marketing as related to recording and live production.
  • Research and procure external studio hires**.
  • Be the custodian of recording studio equipment and ensure all equipment is securely stored, well-maintained and inventory listings are updated.
  • Work staggered work hours when required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in audio production or sound production or other relevant field with two years and above of work experience in the music industry.
  • Diploma holders with five years of relevant experience working in a recording studio or live production may apply. Experience with large format analog mixing consoles will be an added advantage.
  • Good knowledge of professional recording studio and live music production environment, and analog and digital signal flow.
  • Broad technical and computer skills in the areas relating to recording studio and live production which should include Macintosh computer skills, Pro Tools and Logic Pro.
  • Good organisational skills and able to multitask effectively.
  • Good interpersonal, spoken and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team and collaborate with colleagues at all levels.
  • Good customer service skills and able to embrace a student-centric service culture.
  • Possessing a valid occupational first aid certificate would be an added advantage.
  • Good knowledge of the Workplace Safety and Health Act and other work-related regulations or legislations.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures on procurement and budgeting.
