Technical Officer

PRIMARY DETAIL

  • Salary Package: From $86,087 per annum (HEW Level 5) plus 17% superannuation & annual leave loading
  • Appointment Type: Full-time, 12 month fixed-term position (with the possibility of extension)
  • Location: Faculty of Science and Engineering, Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde

The Role

The Technical Operations team in the Faculty of Science and Engineering is seeking a qualified Technical Officer with a background in chemical engineering to support laboratory-based teaching and research activities within the School of Engineering.

Reporting to the Technical Team Lead, you will play a key role in maintaining and supporting the school’s wet chemistry laboratories, cleanroom, and newly established PC2 facility, as well as ensuring the smooth operation of teaching labs through the delivery of high-quality technical support.

In this role, you will contribute to the School’s objectives through the testing, maintenance, and day-to-day management of laboratory equipment. You will prepare teaching materials, set up and support undergraduate practical classes, and provide technical assistance across teaching and research laboratories. You will draw on your knowledge of engineering equipment and health and safety practices to assist in responding to technical enquiries, conducting laboratory inductions, and training users on specialised equipment.

About You

You will have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline and possess a good understanding of hazardous materials, gases, and associated equipment. You bring strong problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot technical issues and can work independently while supporting undergraduate teaching, academic staff, and HDR students. You demonstrate a genuine commitment to workplace health and safety and communicate clearly with a proactive, flexible, and resilient approach. You manage your time and resources effectively, enabling you to plan, prioritise, action, and follow up tasks as required.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs across a diverse range of disciplines and is home to several world-class research centres and facilities. It is comprised of two research departments and four schools, each with a different scale and/or discipline-specific approach to administration, technical and infrastructure support for research and teaching.

The Technical Operations team provide specialised technical support services to teaching and research activities of the Faculty. The team covers a broad range of capabilities and expertise across laboratory, specialist facilities and field-based activities that are essential for the smooth functioning of teaching and research within the Faculty.

Essential Criteria

  • A degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education, and training.
  • Proven experience in operating and maintaining equipment in wet laboratories, cleanrooms, and similar environments, including the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
  • Experience providing technical support in teaching and/or research laboratories, including the development and delivery of inductions and training for users.
  • Sound knowledge of, and experience in, applying, safe work practices within laboratory environments.
  • Demonstrated capability in preparing and interpreting risk assessments, SOPs, and SWIs.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working in civil engineering and/or PC2 laboratories.
  • Familiarity with chemical procurement systems such as Jaggaer.
