The School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS) provides an outstanding multi-disciplinary environment for the pursuit of cutting-edge cardiovascular and metabolic research (https://www.kcl.ac.uk/scms).
We study the fundamental molecular, cellular, and physiological processes that underly normal and abnormal cardiovascular and metabolic function and we drive the translation of this strong basic science into advances in clinical practice to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment. This activity provides a high-quality research and training environment for non-clinical and clinical scientists.
The School occupies facilities across the Guy’s, St Thomas’ and Denmark Hill campuses of King’s College London and comprises over 65 academic groups, hosting 400 staff and 110 PhD students.
About The Role
The School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS) is inviting applicants for the role of Technician to join a dynamic team in the Diabetes and Obesity Theme at the Guy’s Campus. This role provides comprehensive operational and technical support within a laboratory environment, encompassing the maintenance of consumables, equipment, inventories, and service facilities, as well as participation in key operational rotas. The post holder will apply a broad range of technical skills, support Health & Safety compliance, contribute to sustainability initiatives, and deliver training and guidance to staff and students —including new-user training for specialist facilities. The position involves managing a varied workload, resolving routine and complex issues, management of essential resources, and ensuring effective communication across research teams to deliver high quality technical support. The role also includes engaging in professional development, building networks within King’s, and fostering an inclusive, safe, and efficient working environment.
This is a full time post and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
Technical staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7. About You
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- Minimum level 3 qualification, e.g. A levels, AS levels, International Baccalaureate diploma or other Level 3 qualification, plus laboratory work experience in relevant technical/scientific posts in biomedical research OR Considerable knowledge and skills in laboratory-based biomedical research gained through work experience in relevant technical or scientific posts.
- Evidence of an active commitment to career development including professional registration, such as RSciTech or RSci and clear progression in increasingly demanding jobs.
- Knowledge and practical use of a range of relevant technical skills and their environmental impact. Applicants should have experience in at least three of the following technical areas: histology, molecular biology, cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, immunoassays, quantifying cellular metabolic activity or in vivo work.
- Ability to apply learnt techniques to the work context.
- Working knowledge of regulations and best practice governing biomedical research, including Health & Safety and environmental sustainability.
- Clear spoken and written communication skills, with proficient computer use and strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills. Excellent attention to detail.
- Proactive and responsive to contacts in immediate area, across the wider organisation and externally (e.g., suppliers) to build relationships and network.
- Solutions-focused self-starter, with strong planning and analytical skills, able to manage competing priorities and work with minimal supervision.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in assisting/advising less experienced colleagues, monitoring, and providing feedback on performance.
- Able and willing to provide support beyond core hours, as required.
- Recent or current holder of a Home Office Personal licence (or equivalent)
Grade and Salary: £34,713 - £38,127 per annum inclusive of London Weighting Allowance
