Job Description:

University College at Syracuse University is looking for Part-time Instructors to teach in the English Language Institute (ELI), for our summer, fall, and spring programs. The ELI is a pre-academic program designed to prepare international students to succeed in their undergraduate and graduate degree programs at Syracuse University and other higher education institutions in the US. The program is high-touch, rigorous, and fast-paced, providing intensive English language and academic skills training as well as orientation to US academic culture. Programs run year-round, comprising both EAP (English for Academic Purposes) and ESP (English for Specific Purposes) cohorts (in fields such as architecture, law, and business). The ELI works closely with schools and colleges on campus, as well as with sponsoring organizations, such as IIE (Fulbright). The institute participates in the Universitys Internationalization Council, and works collaboratively with schools and colleges on devising ways to provide the best possible support for international students and on maximizing their engagement and integration in the University community.

The program requires dynamic, engaging, and energetic instructors with excellent communication skills who will be responsible for instruction, contribute to the curriculum, and be part of a team. Candidates must possess native or near native English proficiency. Instructors teach up to three EAP courses per 15-week session (21 hours weekly) in fall and spring, and up to three courses per 6-week session in the summer (25 hours weekly). There are two summer sessions, one starting in mid-May and the other in early July. For ESP contract courses, employment dates are specified by the contract, and can run between four and eight weeks.

Education and Experience:

  • Masters in applied linguistics/TESOL or relevant field and/or experience relevant to course assignments.
  • Candidates must possess native or near native English proficiency.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Five (5) plus years experience teaching adult learners of English as a second language.
  • Previous experience with an intensive ESL program.
  • Experience teaching EFL abroad desirable as is mastery of a foreign language.
  • Familiarity with ESP methodology preferred.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Applicants need to be familiar with technology in the classroom.

Responsibilities:

  • Instructors assist with all program-related duties, which include proctoring, grading, and evaluating program-wide tests; counseling students; occasional chaperoning of field trips; and record-keeping (attendance, grades, miscellaneous evaluations of students).
  • Course assignments can include oral communication (listening, speaking), textual communication (writing/reading), and accuracy (grammar and accent reduction) at all levels.
  • Using and developing a variety of effective teaching techniques and assessment methods (including exams) to support the rigorous program.
  • Evaluating student oral presentations, projects, and written work using criteria relevant to the course content and learning objectives.
  • Maintaining and submitting accurate records to meet published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance).
  • Communicating and working cooperatively with colleagues on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that enhance the development of the English Language Institute.
  • Remaining current professionally.
  • Holding required office hours and attending student and faculty meetings.
  • Adhering to the prescribed curriculum and standards, and using assigned course texts and materials.
