Primary Function of Organizational Unit: North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives residents easy access to resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University through educational programs, publications, and events. Dare County has a strong Extension Master Gardener volunteer program with 75 volunteers assisting at the Dare County Extension Center, maintaining the Outer Banks Arboretum, and providing community programs. Overview: This position supports Horticulture programming in Dare County. Responsibilities include planning, implementing, and evaluating programs; recruiting, training, and managing Extension Master Gardeners and volunteers; and supporting community gardens.
Duties and Responsibilities: Work with homeowners, community groups, and others to increase knowledge of horticultural issues and best management practices. Additional tasks include recruiting and training new Master Gardeners, assisting with online record-keeping, providing pesticide education, and developing youth horticulture programs. The applicant must be self-directed, with effective oral and written communication skills, and willing to work with broad audiences.
Departmental Required Skills: Technical competence in horticulture; excellent people and communication skills; ability to deliver information via mass media; willingness to support the entire Extension program; and required travel within and occasionally outside the district.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Advanced training in related fields; work experience in horticulture including turf, ornamentals, home gardening, fruits, vegetables, and pest management; ability to manage volunteers, work in a team, and strong technology skills.
