Temporary Overhire Stitcher
POSITION/ROLE OVERVIEW
The College of Performing Arts at The New School is seeking a highly qualified Overhire Stitcher to join the Performance Operations - Costume Department Staff. The Costume Department is responsible for the creation and delivery of garments as designated and discussed by the Costume Designer, Design Team, and Production Staff.
The Stitcher is a well-organized, self-disciplined individual who takes direction well and is self-sufficient when immediate direction is unavailable. The Stitcher reports to the Costume Shop Manager.
The Stitcher coordinates with the design team(s) and shop management to ensure the timely and safe production of any garments requiring construction and/or alterations. Currently, the department covers the productions for the School of Drama, the Mannes Operas, and Concerts and Events for the School of Jazz.
This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities for work will be scheduled on an as-needed basis by the Costumes department. This position may be renewed pending institutional need and availability of funding.
CORE CAPABILITIES, PRIMARY DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide support during garment fittings for upcoming productions
- Attend all shifts in person as scheduled by shop management
- Hand stitch and machine stitch garments, utilizing various machinery as needed
- Follow all fitting notes documents, paying close attention to shop management's instructions
- Additional responsibilities as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- 1 or more years of experience in patternmaking
- 3 years of professional experience in costume construction, stitching, and alterations
- Knowledge of current techniques, materials, and repertoire relevant for theatrical costuming
- Ability to follow guidance from leaders throughout the production process
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Arts or higher, or equivalent professional experience.
- Professional experience in one or more of the following areas: tailoring, historical costuming, couture stitching, draping
- Experience in an academic environment/working with students or young professionals.
WORK MODE
This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement.
Some nights and weekends may be required.
Costume Shop hours are 10:00am-5:00pm Monday through Friday. Schedule adjustments may be made due to external venue time constraints when offsite.
