ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY
Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.
The Photonics Research Group of the Department of Information Technology (INTEC) develops integrated photonic components and circuits for communications, sensing and other advanced applications. For a short-term research project, we are looking for a laser designer who will develop a concrete laser design and transfer it to the research and fabrication team over a three-month period.
YOUR TASKS
- You will design and simulate III-V semiconductor lasers for integration with silicon and silicon-nitride photonic circuits.
- You will define the epitaxial layer structure and the optical, electrical and thermal design of the laser.
- You will optimise parameters including waveguide geometry, modal overlap, mirror or grating structures, threshold current, output power and efficiency.
- You will assess fabrication tolerances and the optical coupling between the III-V laser and the passive photonic circuit.
- You will use numerical simulation software and establish a reproducible design and simulation workflow.
- You will deliver a design report, simulation files and, where applicable, a mask layout for subsequent fabrication and experimental validation.
- You will discuss the results with researchers specialising in laser fabrication, characterisation, micro-transfer printing and silicon photonics.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- You hold a Master's degree or a PhD in photonics, electrical engineering, applied physics or a closely related field.
- You have demonstrable knowledge of III-V semiconductor-laser physics and design, such as Fabry-Perot, DFB, DBR or external-cavity lasers.
- You have experience with numerical modelling of optical components, using custom code or software such as Ansys Lumerical, COMSOL, Photon Design or comparable tools.
- Knowledge of waveguide modelling, carrier transport, thermal effects, coupled-mode theory or laser rate-equation models is an asset.
- Experience with photonic layout, fabrication tolerances or heterogeneous integration is an asset.
- You work independently and with a strong focus on results, and you document design decisions and simulations carefully.
- You communicate fluently in English. Knowledge of Dutch is an asset but is not required.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
- We offer you a full-time, fixed-term contract for a period of three months.
- The intended starting date is 1/10, or as soon as possible thereafter.
- Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate). Click here for more information about our salary scales.
- All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
