Tenure-Track Assistant/Associate Professor of Chemistry
Thiel College has opened a search for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor of chemistry to join the faculty in August of 2026. (The rank of assistant or associate professor will be negotiated based on the experience of the new hire.)
The area of expertise is open, but preference will be given to candidates with backgrounds in inorganic or analytical chemistry. The primary teaching responsibilities could include the two-semester sequence of courses in general chemistry as well as upper-level courses in inorganic chemistry, quantitative analysis, instrumental analysis, environmental chemistry, or other topics related to the candidate’s expertise. The typical teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. Chemistry faculty are expected to supervise independent research projects of chemistry majors, and there will be opportunities to teach advanced topics courses, courses for non-majors, as well as courses in the honors program.
In addition to teaching, tenure-track faculty are expected to contribute to the vibrant life of the college, which includes, but is not limited to, advising and mentoring students majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, and environmental chemistry; serving on committees to contribute to the governance of the college; participating in recruitment efforts and convocations; contributing to the development and assessment of the chemistry program and the chemistry and physics department; and exhibiting professional growth and development.
The successful candidate will join a collegial group of faculty comprising the Chemistry and Physics Departments who work together to shape our curriculum and maintain our instrumentation and facilities. Thiel College is currently entering phase two of renovations to our science building, and so the new hire will participate in designing new teaching spaces and laboratories for future generations of Thiel students. Our department is equipped with a 60 MHz permanent magnet FT-NMR, modern UV-Vis and ATR-FTIR spectrometers, GC, HPLC, GC-MS, apparatus for cyclic voltammetry, and a scanning electron microscope, all of which are housed in recently renovated lab spaces. We enthusiastically seek a colleague who embraces undergraduate teaching and will help us continue to deliver an engaging chemistry program to a range of learners including non-science majors and students interested in the health sciences and nutrition. Thiel chemistry majors and minors seek admission to medical professional schools and pursue graduate study in chemistry and biochemistry, and secure rewarding positions in the chemical industries in the region.
Candidates for this position should have completed a PhD in inorganic chemistry or analytical chemistry, broadly defined; other sub-disciplines may be considered depending on how well they complement the expertise of existing faculty. Post-doctoral experience is not required but would be favorably considered. Experience in teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduates is particularly desirable. To apply for the position, please submit the following documents: (i) a cover letter expressing interest in the position; (ii) a curriculum vitae; (iii) transcripts for all degrees earned; (iv) a statement of teaching philosophy (1-2 pages); and (v) a statement of research interests particularly suitable for an undergraduate institution (maximum of ~3 pages). Unofficial copies of transcripts are suitable for the initial application; official copies of transcripts will be requested from those invited for interviews. The candidate should also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent separately. All application materials should be sent in a single PDF document [items (i) through (v)] by clicking here.
Initial review of applications will begin December 1, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled.
