About the Department of Physics

The Department of Physics invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor faculty position in experimental quantum matter. Candidates in all areas of experimental condensed matter physics and atomic, molecular, and optical physics are encouraged to apply, including but not limited to: quantum materials, quantum technologies, light-matter interactions, quantum optics, low-temperature physics, low-dimensional systems, nanoscience, nanophotonics, ultrafast quantum dynamics and nanoscale scanning probe microscopy.

The Department of Physics has approximately 48 faculty with research interests in condensed matter physics, atomic, molecular, and optical physics, astrophysics, space physics, biophysics, geophysics and subatomic physics. Our experimental condensed matter / AMO group is well equipped with labs for ultrafast laser spectroscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, low-temperature physics, cavity optomechanics, and ultracold atoms. The Department of Physics has exceptional resources to support experimental research programs, such as an advanced machine shop, electronics shop, and specialist technicians. Researchers also have access to over $100M in nanofabrication and characterization equipment at the University of Alberta's nanoFAB facility.

Our condensed matter theory group has strong ties with the experimental group and focuses on superconductivity, topological quantum materials, computational physics, and quantum simulation; this capacity is currently expanding under Quantum Horizons Alberta (QHA), a new $25M Alberta-wide initiative that significantly expands foundational knowledge research in quantum science at the University of Alberta.

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) Quantum and Nanotechnologies Research Centre, located next door on the University of Alberta campus, also houses a number of condensed matter and quantum technologies labs. Access to high-performance computing resources is available through the Digital Research Alliance of Canada. Initiatives by the Governments of Alberta and Canada provide exceptional opportunities for additional funding to establish new research programs at the University of Alberta.

The Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, and the University of Alberta are committed to access, community and belonging, as documented in Changing the Story and our Indigenous Strategic Plan.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an innovative and externally-funded research program in experimental quantum matter
  • Build an exceptional, independent research program
  • Supervise graduate students
  • Teach physics at the undergraduate and graduate levels

Qualifications

  • PhD in physics (or related field)
  • Demonstrated leadership in their field for developing an exceptional, innovative and externally-funded research program in experimental quantum matter.
  • Strong mentorship experience and communication skills for supervising graduate students and teaching physics at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

How to Apply

Please submit the following as one .pdf by clicking the “Apply Now” button below:

  • Cover letter
  • CV with list of publications
  • Research plan
  • Statement of Teaching Interests
  • Statement regarding Access, Community, and Inclusion Philosophy (1 page max)

We also require at least three confidential letters of reference, at least one of which addresses the candidate’s teaching ability and potential. The referees should submit their letters directly to physref@ualberta.ca with the subject line, "Experimental Quantum Matter Faculty Position."

The competition will remain open until January 30, 2026.
