Position Description
The Department of Plant Science of McGill University’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences invites applications for a tenure track position at the level of Assistant Professor, in the area of Sustainable Crop Improvement.
McGill’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is located on the Macdonald Campus, 30 km from the city of Montreal, where there is a concentration of life sciences and biotechnology companies. The Campus comprises 650 hectares of farm and forested lands, experimental field stations and state-of-the-art student learning facilities (library and computer laboratories).

Job Duties
The successful candidate will have a solid background in crop plant improvement, quantitative genetics and genomic selection, sustainable cropping systems, and/or high throughput genotyping and phenotyping methods to complement the current expertise in the department. The research focus would be on the use of genetic variations related to abiotic or biotic stress response in plants of economic importance to Canada such as field or horticultural crops.
The successful candidate is expected to teach core courses [such as an introductory course in plant biology (i.e., Organism 1), Plant Breeding, or Statistical Methods 1] in the Faculty’s undergraduate programs and a graduate course in Sustainable Crop Improvement. In addition to teaching, the candidate will be expected to conduct innovative research in plant breeding and crop improvement, making full use of the extensive field research infrastructure at the Macdonald Campus of McGill University, including the Emile A. Lods Agronomy Research Centre, the Macdonald Campus Farm, the Horticultural Research Centre, and the Eastern Canadian Plant Phenotyping Facilities. The candidate should also actively pursue collaborative research with other departments and schools within the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to foster interdisciplinary approaches. Participation in Department, Faculty, and University committees is expected, as are interactions with provincial and federal organizations and professional societies.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Ph.D. in Crop Science, Plant Breeding, Plant Biology or related field; track record and demonstrated excellence in field research and the use of phenotyping/phenomics/genomic methods. McGill University is an English-language university where most teaching and research activities are conducted in the English language, thereby requiring English communication both verbally and in writing. The ability to communicate in French and prior experience with the Canadian agricultural and agri-food industry are highly desirable.
