that intersect with materials, energy, sustainability, catalysis, chemical biology, automation, or data-driven and computational approaches to chemical science are of particular interest because they align with the institution's and the department's core strengths.
The Department of Chemistry tackles global challenges in sustainability, health, and quality of life. We foster a highly collaborative culture that encourages interdisciplinary, cross-cutting science, with chemistry as the central pillar. The Department of Chemistry, part of the Mellon College of Science, maintains strong ties to Chemical Engineering, Biological Sciences, and Materials Science and Engineering. Faculty have access to shared instrumentation and core facilities, as well as connections to Carnegie Mellon's broader strengths in computation, robotics, and data science. Faculty can also engage with the CMU AI Science Foundry, which pairs AI-guided autonomous experimentation with programmable cloud lab facilities in chemistry, biology, and hard materials to shorten the timeline from idea to result. The department provides competitive start-up packages, dedicated laboratory space, and access to shared computational and instrumentation facilities. The department is also expanding its research and facilities footprint, with the new Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences opening in late 2027. Pittsburgh is a research-dense region, home to the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC, and offers a high quality of life and affordable cost of living relative to other major research hubs.
Successful candidates will be expected to develop an independent, externally funded research program and to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring. We seek colleagues who will strengthen the department's culture of collaboration and its commitment to excellence in research and education.
Qualifications:
A Ph. D. in Chemistry or a closely related discipline is required. This position is intended at the rank of assistant professor; but exceptional candidates of any rank may be considered.
