The Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI) is looking for an ambitious colleague who is eager to strengthen and connect these areas, while also contributing to the institute’s teaching and research community. You will become part of KdVI’s Analysis group.

This is what you will do As this is an open-rank position, the scope of responsibilities and expectations will be adjusted according to the candidate’s level of experience.
Tasks and responsibilities:
- Further develop and strengthen an internationally visible research line in analysis by publishing in high-level international journals, presenting at leading conferences, and supervising PhD students. Career development includes increasing leadership responsibilities over time.
- Set up and develop a research group and take an active role in the scientific direction of the Analysis group, with progression towards (co-)leadership at senior level.
- Actively pursue research funding from national and international sources with increasing emphasis on strategic grant acquisition at senior level.
- Contribute to teaching at bachelor and master level within the Mathematics programmes, including supervision of theses and participation in national master programmes. At senior level, take on a coordinating role in teaching and curriculum development.
- Collaborate with researchers across disciplines within and outside the University of Amsterdam, contributing expertise to joint research projects and fostering interdisciplinary and/or industrial collaborations.
- Contribute to the academic community and institutional development through organisational activities. At mid-career level this includes active participation in committees and departmental activities; at senior level this expands to leadership roles such as committee chairing and broader strategic responsibilities within the institute or faculty.
What we ask of you Your experience and profile:
- PhD in Mathematics or closely related field.
- Strong commitment to research in analysis with the potential to further develop and shape research directions within the group, as demonstrated by an excellent publication record, invited and contributed talks at international conferences and workshops, and a clear research vision appropriate to career stage. At senior level, a sustained international reputation and leadership in the field are expected.
- Solid expertise in research in analysis, with the ability to further develop and shape directions within the group.
- Experience in university-level teaching, with demonstrated didactic abilities and a commitment to high-quality education. At senior level, a strong track record of teaching excellence and positive evaluations is expected.
- Experience in (co-)supervision of BSc, MSc and/or PhD students, with increasing responsibility for PhD supervision and academic mentoring at senior level.
- Proven ability to attract external funding and experience with grant writing; at senior level, a strong track record in securing competitive national and international grants is required.
- Experience with, and willingness to further develop, engagement in valorisation activities and interdisciplinary and/or industrial collaborations. At senior level, a demonstrated track record of initiating and sustaining such collaborations is expected.
- Strong communication and organisational skills, and a positive approach to committee work and administrative tasks. At senior level, proven leadership within departmental and institutional contexts is required.
- Excellent command of English. Fluency in Dutch is not required, but a willingness to acquire sufficient proficiency in Dutch for teaching and career development is expected.
- Postdoc and international experience are standard expectations for this position, however other factors or comparable relevant experiences may be considered if well-motivated in the cover letter. At the senior level however, strong international recognition and connections are required.
This is what we offer you At all ranks, this position is intended to lead to a permanent (tenured) appointment. We therefore offer a full-time (38 hours per week) temporary contract for an initial period of 18 months, including a two-month probationary period. Subject to a positive evaluation, the appointment will be converted into a permanent position. The preferred starting date is as soon as possibleThe position is offered as open rank, ranging from Assistant Professor to Full Professor, depending on qualifications and experience. Salary will be determined in accordance with university regulations for academic staff and based on experience and qualifications.The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between assistant professor € 3,706 to € 5,760 (scale 10). to full professor € 7,475 to € 10,815 (scale H2).In addition there is a 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI) is the mathematics research institute of the Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam. KdVI provides a stimulating scientific environment, with research focusing on Algebra, Geometry and Mathematical Physics; Analysis; Stochastics; and Discrete Mathematics and Quantum Information. The institute also contributes to mathematics education within the Faculty of Science. KdVI participates in the national mathematics research clusters GQT, STAR, NDNS+, and DIAMANT, as well as the Quantum Software Consortium. It maintains formal and informal collaborations with the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and partners in the financial sector. In addition, KdVI organises outreach activities such as Leve de Wiskunde, masterclasses, and online web classes. The institute comprises approximately 30 faculty members and 40 postdoctoral researchers and PhD candidates.
The Analysis program of the KdVI consists of two research groups: the Numerical Analysis and Applied Analysis group headed by Prof. Rob Stevenson, and the Pure Analysis and Dynamical Systems group headed by Prof. Han Peters. The Analysis group currently contains four other full-time staff members, two part-time staff members, four postdocs and several PhD students. The research in the pure analysis and dynamical systems group addresses dynamics of both real and complex dynamical systems in low dimensions. The research in the Numerical Analysis and Applied Analysis group addresses numerical solution methods for PDE's, as well as problems from computational geometry and medical imaging. Current researchers from the analysis program frequently collaborate with the stochastics or the discrete mathematics groups within the KdVI.
