The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is looking to appoint an outstanding individual to a Tenured Professorship in „Piano/Piano Methodology“ (W2 salary) within the Faculty of Philosophy II, Institute for Music, Media and Speech Sciences (IMMS), Department of Music Pedagogy. The position will commence preferably by the earliest possible date.
We are seeking a candidate with proven expertise in piano, piano performance and piano methodology, who is interested in collaborating on teaching and research projects at MLU and beyond.
In accordance with section 34 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities, the responsibilities of this artistic professorship include, in particular, the university-level training of teacher-training students specialising in piano, their preparation for the pedagogical and artistic application of piano playing in a school context, and the coordination of instrumental training and accompaniment within the department. The successful candidate is expected to be able to align with MLU’s profile areas ‘Cultures of Knowledge and Education’ and ‘Transformation’, thereby strengthening professional music education across society and the ‘Musikland Sachsen-Anhalt’ network. A prerequisite is a willingness to shape and further develop the curricula for teacher training in music at the university, as well as the joint degree programmes with the Evangelical University of Church Music (EHK), in consultation with the state. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with the departments of the Institute for Music, Media and Speech Sciences (IMMS) in research and teaching. Commitment to a specific area of research is also desirable. A willingness to participate in academic self-governance is required.
Applicants must meet the appointment requirements set out in section 35 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities, in particular a completed university degree in piano (Diploma, Master’s degree), proof of pedagogical aptitude (usually through positive teaching evaluations, preferably through in-depth artistic and methodological teaching at university level), and particular aptitude for artistic work (e.g. concert examination, masterclass examination). Furthermore, evidence of additional artistic achievements (e.g. extensive experience in chamber music or song accompaniment, experience in a field of early music, distinguished competition prizes, a proven track record of concert performances) must be provided. Excellent knowledge of German, at least at C1 level, is required.
