The Philip H Hagemann Performing Arts Department at the University of Southern Indiana, a public university in Evansville, Indiana, seeks applicants for a 12-month administrative staff position as to manage the daily technical operations of the University’s theatre facilities including managing the daily operations of the scene shop, supervising and training student crews, and aid in maintaining lighting, sound, and scenery equipment, and to ensure operational safety procedures.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Creating working drawing of sets for construction.
• Supervising the construction of all production scenery and effects. Coordinate set-installed electrics, load-ins and strikes with lighting and sound departments.
• Ensure that scenery and effects for each production, as articulated by the production calendar, are executed within specified timelines.
• Demonstrate knowledge of safe theatrical rigging equipment and practice. Schedule safety inspections of stage rigging equipment as needed.
• Oversight of technical budgetary resources as specified by USI Budget Office, financial manager and Department chair.
• Purchase, lease and/or borrow equipment as needed, within specified budgetary limits.
• Ensure that invoices for reimbursement and/or receipts for procurement, with respect to authorized expenditures, are recorded and submitted in a timely fashion.
• Hire, train and supervise student employees.
• Assist in recruiting and training run crew and stagehands for all productions.
• Attend weekly faculty meetings or as requested.
• Attend and give reports at all production meetings.
• Creating, maintaining, and communicating the working timetables/calendars of the University theatres.
• Providing supplementary assistance to construction and acquisition of props and assistance in painting as needed.
• Run and organize weekend student workdays/load-ins.
• Monitor the condition of and maintain equipment, tools, the scene shop, and related storage facilities.
• Keep a current inventory of all shop tools, machinery, and supplies.
• Perform preventive maintenance on equipment, repair, or replace as needed.
• Maintain organized and safe production spaces including scene shop, paint shop, prop shop, prop storage, soft goods storage, and scenery storage.
• Maintain performance spaces regarding production and classroom readiness.
• Facilitate and organize the lending and return of Theatre Arts Department production supplies (props, tools, soft goods, scenery, lighting equipment, etc.).
• Manage donations of scenery related equipment including consulting with other production faculty/staff about proposed donations.
• Create a positive working environment, be a positive role model/mentor for students, and represent the department positively to the campus community
• Ensure that he/she can be always contacted during performances in case of an emergency.
• Determine the needs of professional over-hire for productions in conjunction with Theatre Management/Department Chair.
• Maintain safety standards (as specified by the Performing Arts Department and The University of Southern Indiana) Maintain safety equipment.
• Process work orders through the Physical Plant for building maintenance for the University theatres. Act as a liaison with Physical Plant to ensure work is done within defined timeframes not to interrupt theatre preparations, practice, and productions.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

• Bachelor's degree and significant professional work required.
• A minimum of three years theatrical and technical experience.
• Strong knowledge of structural engineering as it applies to theatrical construction
• Knowledge of and ability to execute theatrical rigging in a safe and functional manner
• Experience with set construction and equipment including saws, drills, planers, sanders, metalworking equipment, welders, and painting equipment. Knowledge of CNC machine use and 3D printing a plus.
• Experience with theatrical equipment such as sound and lighting equipment.
• Significant experience with CAD programs (Vectorworks or AutoCAD).
• Previous supervisory experience required.
• Must possess strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work under tight time constraints required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

M.F.A. preferred.
