Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Trial Methodology & Implementation

Position Profile

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Trial Methodology & Implementation. The successful candidate will be appointed to a joint full-time probationary (tenure-track) or tenured position. The rank and appointment type will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be appointed to the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Department of Medicine with potential cross-appointment(s) in other relevant departments.

Randomized trial methodology requires specific knowledge on current methods to design and conduct studies to test the safety, efficacy and effectiveness of interventions using control groups, randomization, and oftentimes blinding to minimize bias. Trials may encompass varying randomized designs (e.g., individually randomized, cluster randomized, parallel, adaptive, factorial, pragmatic, registry-based, etc.) and interventions (drugs, diagnostic tests, technologies, devices, health services/quality improvement, implementation, prevention and behavioral changes, among others).

In accordance with the regulations set for Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs (www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca), Tier 2 chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher in their field at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process; please contact Research Development at The University of Western Ontario at ResearchWesternCRC@uwo.ca for more information. Please consult the Canada Research Chair website for full information, including further details on eligibility criteria. http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/program-programme/nomination-mise_en_candidature-eng.aspx

Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalence with advanced training relevant to randomized trial methodology (e.g., epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical research methodology, etc.) and demonstrated ability to both lead their own independent research program as well as collaborate with other researchers. It is expected that the candidate have a track record of involvement in the application of randomized trial methodology within specific domains (e.g., disease domains, classes of interventions/exposures, particular settings, etc.) and also have a track record of advancing methodology or application in areas with application to randomized trials (e.g., design methods, biostatistical methods, sampling methods, reporting methods). The successful candidate’s research interests will be supported by existing expertise in trial research across the two departments, including epidemiologists, biostatisticians, health economists, and clinician scientists. They should be a recognized early career national or international leader as exemplified by invited lectures and/or conference symposia as appropriate for their discipline and career stage. The successful candidate should also have demonstrated experience in teaching trial methodology and supervising graduate students. Demonstrated ability to secure career-stage appropriate external peer-reviewed funding (e.g., CIHR, NSERC, NIH, PCORI, European Union, etc.) and leadership roles in operations of randomized trials would be an asset. Successful candidates will have a record of incorporating equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization (EDID) principles into their research, teaching and/or mentorship.
