Description:
SUNY Purchase invites applications for the position of Transfer Success Advisor . Reporting to the Director of the Academic Resource Center, the Transfer Success Advisor will provide comprehensive academic, career, and student support to an assigned caseload of transfer students.
The advisor will help transfer students navigate their transition to Purchase, develop academic plans, connect with campus resources, and prepare for their careers and post-graduation goals. The position will support student retention, persistence, degree completion, and career readiness through proactive outreach and individualized advising.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to student-centered and developmental advising and experience supporting diverse student populations, including first-generation, adult, international, and historically underrepresented students.
Essential Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Advise an assigned caseload of transfer students from enrollment through graduation.
• Help students understand transfer credits, degree requirements, academic policies, registration, and pathways to graduation.
• Develop and monitor individualized academic plans based on students' academic and career goals.
• Monitor student progress and proactively reach out to students who may need additional support.
• Assist students experiencing academic difficulty, including those on academic warning or probation, with developing success and recovery plans.
• Provide career counseling and help students connect their academic interests to careers, internships, graduate education, and other post-graduation opportunities.
• Connect students with financial, basic-needs, academic, wellness, accessibility, and other campus resources.
• Provide individual and group advising, workshops, orientation programming, and transfer student initiatives.
• Maintain accurate advising records and monitor student progress using student information systems, degree audit tools, and early-alert platforms.
• Collaborate with faculty, academic departments, and campus offices to coordinate support and strengthen the transfer student experience.
• Provide training and resources to faculty and staff on transfer pathways, policies, and available student services.
• Participate in transfer recruitment, orientation, registration, open house, commencement, and other College events as needed.
• Contribute to assessment and initiatives focused on transfer student retention, persistence, and career outcomes.
• Supervise peer advisors or student assistants, as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Two to three years of professional experience in academic advising, student affairs, higher education, counseling, career development, or a related field.
• Knowledge of developmental and holistic advising practices.
• Experience supporting college students and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to success.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills.
• Commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds and fostering an inclusive environment.
• Experience with student information systems, degree audit tools, early-alert platforms, and Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, Career Development, or a related field.
• Experience working with transfer students or in transfer advising.
• Experience working within SUNY or another public higher education institution.
• Experience with Banner, Degree Works, Navigate, Starfish, EAB Navigate, or similar systems.
• Experience providing career counseling or career-readiness programming.
• Experience supporting students with financial or basic-needs challenges.
• Experience developing training or professional development for faculty and staff.
• Experience supporting academic probation, academic recovery, or retention initiatives.
• Familiarity with transfer articulation, transfer pathways, and SUNY transfer policies.
• Experience using assessment and data to improve student success and retention.
