Position Description
Employees in this position are responsible for augmenting a supervising physician's data-gathering abilities to reach decisions and institute patient care plans. Provides health care services to patients under the direction and responsibility of a physician.
Major/Essential Functions
Clinical Operations
Delivers medical care to incarcerated patients within scope of practice under physician supervision. Maintains minimum productivity for patient encounters. Completes encounters in alignment with established clinical protocols. Documents assessment and treatment plans.
Facility Coverage and Travel Requirements
Provides clinical services across multiple correctional facilities as assigned, including any correctional unit or contracted county jail. Maintains flexibility to travel and work on-site based on operational needs, staffing gaps, and patient care demands. Demonstrates readiness to deploy with short notice when required, ensuring continuity of care across all supported locations. Complies with all facility-specific security protocols, credentialing requirements, and orientation procedures prior to providing care. Maintains reliable transportation and ability to travel independently between sites as needed.
On-Call and Urgent Care Support
Provides on-call coverage during scheduled shifts, responding to clinical inquiries within 30 minutes. Supports triage and urgent care decision-making, ensuring appropriate disposition. Completes on-call encounter documentation in a timely manner.
Documentation and Compliance
Maintains complete, accurate, and compliant medical records. Ensures adherence to all regulatory, contractual, and organizational requirements, with zero preventable compliance violations.
Care Coordination and Clinical Decision-Making
Order diagnostic tests, medications, and referrals in accordance with TTUHSC correctional healthcare protocols. Ensures labs, referrals, and follow-ups are initiated within defined timeframes. Escalates care appropriately to the supervising physician or specialists with zero preventable delays in urgent cases.
Clinical Program Support and Collaboration
Collaborates with supervising physician and facility leadership to support effective healthcare delivery. Participates in care planning, operational coordination, and process improvement initiatives. Attends required meetings and contributes to maintaining continuity and efficiency of care delivery.
Other Duties as Assigned
Performs additional responsibilities as required to support clinical operations and patient care within the scope of the role.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 3 years of experience in a Correctional Health Care inpatient setting.
- Ability to travel to different units and facilities to provide on-site services for extended periods of time.
Required Qualifications
Graduation from a Physician Assistant training program approved by the Council on Allied Health Education Accreditation of the American Medical Association. Current Physician Assistant license in the State of Texas or ability to transfer license to Texas. Certification as a Physician Assistant as evidenced by passing the examinations given by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants. OR Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as a nurse practitioner from an approved certification program recognized by Texas Board of Nursing. Current R.N. license as approved by the Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer license to Texas. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner from an approved certification program as recognized by Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer certification to Texas.
